Jaysh al-Islam claimed on July 9 that it had foiled a “terrorist operation” by the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in the Turkish-occupied city of Afrin in northern Aleppo.
In an official statement, the group said its militants arrested two PKK female operatives while they were attempting to plant a heavy improvised explosive device (IED) in a local market in Afrin’s city center. The group said that the operatives confessed and provided detailed information on how they snuck into the city.
“They confessed to the entire plan that meant to disturb security, spread panic, terrorize the safe [people] and kill them,” the statement reads.
Jaysh al-Islam also released photos of two young girls, without providing any details about their identity. Both were handed over to Turkish-affiliated security forces.

A series of IED attacks rocked Afrin city in the last few weeks. In the most recent attacks, on July 3 and 5, two people were killed and at least four others were injured. Usually, Turkish-backed militants are targeted.
Kurdish forces are known for conducting such attacks in Turkish-occupied areas, especially in Afrin. Nevertheless, Jaysh al-Islam claims are highly-questionable. At the time when the notorious group controlled Damascus’ Eastern Ghouta, it was infamous for imprisoning local women and those who belong to minority groups on unfounded basis.
