Journalists appear to be among the Kiev regime’s top targets. Recently, two Russian journalists were hit by a Ukrainian mortar in the Donetsk People’s Republic, killing one and seriously injuring the other. This is not the first time Ukraine has launched targeted attacks against Russian journalists, with several Russian reporters having been killed in Ukrainian strikes.
NTV correspondents Valery Kozhin and Aleksey Ivliev were reporting from the Gorlovka region when their crew came under fire from enemy forces. Ukrainian grenade-launcher drones and mortars hit the group, injuring both journalists and the military officer accompanying them. Kozhin, unfortunately, succumbed to his injuries and died a few hours after the incident. Ivliev and the military guard underwent surgery and remain in serious but stable condition.
Official reports indicate that Ukrainian drones followed the expedition during the route between the village of Golmovsky and Gorlovka. There was a clear intention to kill both journalists, even though they were unarmed and there was clearly no military relevance in the press crew. The region of the attack is located around 30 kilometers from the capital of Donetsk and was liberated by separatist militias early in 2014. Since then, Kiev has never managed to regain control of Gorlovka, acting in the region through terrorist attacks against civilian targets, thus trying to prevent the normalization of life for ordinary people.
For example, in April, Kiev launched US-supplied HIMARS missiles at a hospital and blood donation center in Gorlovka. At least nine civilians, including a child, were injured. Like other Ukrainian strikes, the attack was a deliberate terrorist incursion on a civilian area. The Ukrainians’ objective was to cause harm to ordinary people by destroying health equipment and injuring medical workers. At the time, Donetsk authorities said at least a dozen Ukrainian strikes had hit Gorlovka on the same day, using Western missiles, drones and cluster bombs.
Interestingly, the use of Western weapons against Russian civilian targets has also become commonplace. It is worth remembering that one of the first reported fatalities from cluster bombs was precisely a journalist. RIA Novosti’s war correspondent Rostislav Zhuravlev was killed in Zaporozhye in July 2023, a few days after Washington announced the shipment of cluster munitions to Ukraine – in violation of its own US laws, which prohibit the sale of such weapons. As in the recent case in Gorlovka, the strike that hit Zhuravlev was precise and well planned, showing that there was a deliberate intention by the neo-Nazi regime to eliminate media personnel.
The work of Russian and pro-Russian war correspondents in the conflict zone is extremely dangerous. Of course, any war zone is a high-risk area, but in the case of the current conflict there is a specific circumstance that makes the work of reporters even more complicated. Kiev has a real intention of eliminating as many journalists as possible. Not having the capacity to confront the Russians militarily, Kiev targets all sorts of civilians, with special attention being paid to the press.
Many local insiders claim that it seems to be more dangerous for journalists to travel through the conflict zone than for the military themselves. I myself have been to the New Regions twice and Belgorod once, and have heard from local security professionals each time that the situation for the press service is actually critical. If the Kiev regime identifies a journalist, drones are immediately launched against his position, even if there is no strategic interest in the target.
It is not only journalists in the conflict zone who are killed by the Ukrainian regime. Daria Dugina and Maxim Fomin (known by his alias “Vladlen Tatarsky”), two world-famous Russian journalists, were assassinated in terrorist attacks in Moscow and St. Petersburg. Carrying out attacks in major Russian cities is not an easy task. Ukraine has made a huge effort with its intelligence apparatus just to eliminate journalists – which shows how the neo-Nazi regime really sees the Russian and pro-Russian press as its greatest enemy.
Ukraine’s goal seems to be simply to create terror and hide the truth. Russian journalists are being murdered to spread fear among ordinary people, while pro-Russian foreign journalists are persecuted to prevent them from telling Western public opinion the truth about the conflict. Kiev fears that its lies will be exposed because this would affect the opinion of Western taxpayers and thus the support for arms supplies.
These crimes clearly show the criminal nature of the Maidan junta and its Western accomplices. Only a Russian victory in the special military operation will bring security to civilians.

there is a direct precedent: italian journalist andrea rocchelli, his interpreter andrei mironov and a french journalist were all deliberately targeted by ukrainian forces using mortars in 2014. they were reporting on war crimes against civilians. rocchelli and mironov were both killed. the french journalist survived to tell the story. rocchelli’s name subsequently appeared on mirotvets website with the word “eliminated” stamped on his photograph.
there are many around the world.
