On March 4, a large blast rocked the town of Ma’arrat Misrin in the northwestern Syrian region of Greater Idlib, which is occupied by several terrorist groups.
The blast reportedly emanated from an improvised rocket factory of al-Qaed-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), the de-facto ruler of Greater Idlib. The blast completely destroyed the factory, wounding at least one person.
While some Syrian activists said that the blast was the result of a strike, others said that it was caused by an incident or sabotage.
The blast came following two attacks by HTS that targeted positions of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) on Taurus mountain in the northern Lattakia countryside and near the town of Urum al-Sughra in the western countryside of Aleppo. The terrorist group alleged that 16 soldiers were killed in both attacks.
HTS’s recent attacks were a blatant violation of the ceasefire agreement on Greater Idlib, which was brokered by Russia and Turkey more than two years ago. The blast in Ma’arrat Misrin may have been the result of a retaliatory operation by the SAA and its allies.
The terrorist group escalated attacks against the SAA last December in an apparent response to Russian efforts to restore ties between Ankara, who maintains forces in Greater Idlib, and Damascus.
The situation in Greater Idlib today is far from being stable. However, the SAA and its allies will not likely resume ground operations any time soon in order to facilitate the Turkish-Syrian normalization process. Damascus wants to neutralize HTS and other terrorist groups in the region in coordination with Ankara.
