Military Overview : New Wave Of Devastating Russian Strikes Set Ukrainian Rear On Fire

On January 8, the Russian Ministry of Defense confirmed that this morning, Russian forces launched “a group strike with high-precision long-range naval and air-based weapons, including the Kinzhal hypersonic missiles, at the facilities of the military-industrial complex of Ukraine.” Explosions have been thundering throughout Ukraine since the evening of January 7.

The attack began with massive drones strikes in different Ukrainian regions at night; and in the morning, a combined attack with numerous drones and missiles inflicted more damage to the Ukrainian military-industrial facilities.

Dozens of explosions thundered in the Odessa, Kiev, Kharkov, Khmelnitsky, Zhitomir regions, as well as in the cities of Zaporozhie, Krivoy Rog, Dnepropetrovsk.

For the first time, the Ukrainian Armed Forces admitted that they could not repel a massive Russian strike. The Ukrainian Air Force confirmed that Russian missiles hit military, industrial and critical facilities throughout Ukraine.

According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Ukrainian forces managed to intercept only 26 targets out of 60, including none of the 7 S-300/S-400 anti-aircraft guided missiles, not a single Kinzhal, not a single X-22 cruise missile, not a single Iskander-M, not a single guided aviation missile X-31P.

The local Ukrainian official confirmed damage to critical infrastructure facilities, industrial civilian and military facilities in Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhia and Khmelnitsky regions.

So far, some of the targets struck by Russian forces was revealed by various sources.

Most of the strikes hit the Kiev district in Kharkiv, where at least four large plants are located. According to local sources, the following facilities came under attack:

  • Kharkiv Aviation Factory;
  • State scientific and production enterprise”Kommunar”;
  • Machine-building Plant “FED”;
  • JSC “Khartron”, which develops and produces spacecraft and missile control systems;
  • the headquarters of the AFU in the Kiev district of Kharkiv;
  • the facility used for accommodation of the Ukrainian military in the area of the National Guard Academy;
  • the point of deployment of the Ukrainian military personnel in the area of the settlement of Veliky Burluk.

Russian missile strikes resulted in destruction of the railway tracks of a high-speed tram, which were used for military needs, military warehouses and a workshop used for the production of drones on the territory hidden in a shopping center in the area of Krivyi Rih.

New wave of Russian strikes hit the Starokonstantinov military airfield in the Khmelnitsky region. Explosions also thundered in the village of Shepetinovka, which seres as a large transport hub through which Western weapons are being transferred.

In Dnipro, UAV strikes damaged several buildings. According to the local officials, the facilities included an educational institution and a dormitory nearby, two high-rise buildings and an administrative building. Since there should be no students there during the winter holidays, the civilian facilities could be easily used for accommodation of the Ukrainian military.

The local authorities confirmed damage to some infrastructure facility in Zaporozhie. As a result of the strikes, temporary power and water outages were reported in the city.

The Odessa region came under massive drone attack. Explosions thundered in Ilyichevsk (Chernomorsk), Belyaevsky district, as well as in the Ovidiopolsky district and the city of Odessa. The port infrastructure and the Shkolny airfield were reportedly damaged. One of the strikes in the village of Dalnik was filmed:

 

 

Meanwhile, the previous Russian waves of strikes result in large-scale problems with energy supply throughout the country. Numerous large Ukrainian energy facilities have been damaged over the past week, and freezing weather, which came to the country in the recent days, resulted in devastating consequences to the entire energy system in Ukraine.
