As a result of heavy battles, the Russian Army won the battle for Netailovo located on western outskirts of Avdeevka. On May 27, the Russian Ministry of Defense officially confirmed the full control of the settlement and the end of the mop up operations.
The battle for Netailovo began in mid-April after Russian forces took control of Pervomaiskoe, secured their positions and launched new assault advancing to the west. The Russian military rapidly broke through Ukrainian defense in the eastern part of the town and took control of the center; but after the Armed Forces of Ukraine sent reinforcement to the area, Russian offensive slowed down. Prolonged battles continued on the western outskirts. Ukrainian military positions to the south of Netailovo also prevented the Russian military from gaining a foothold on the southern outskirts.
The full Russian control of the town was reported about a week ago. Russian assault groups repelled Ukrainian servicemen from their last positions on the western outskirts. LINK However, the Armed Forces of Ukraine attempted counterattacks and the mop up operations were necessary to secure Russian control.
On May 26, Russian was raised in the building of the local administration in the center of Netailovo by servicemen of the 9th Separate Motorized Rifle Brigade of the 1st Army Corps.
Ukrainian military sources admitted another defeat. The 59th Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine left its military positions in and around the settlement. Ukrainians also confirmed that Russian forces had expanded the zone of their control south of Netailovo and approached the outskirts of Karlovka, the next Ukrainian stronghold to the west.
The retreat of the Ukrainian 59th Brigade was not secured, as a result, the unit suffered more losses after bloody battles in the ruins of Netailovo:
Over the past day, the AFU lost several more positions that were aimed to defend the outskirts of Karlovka. Approaching the village, the Russian military is already heavily shelling the village and the roads west of the settlement, thwarting military supplies to this Ukrainian stronghold. At the moment, Russian forces are preparing for the assault that is expected to be launched in the coming days.
The village of Karlovka was an important logistics hub of the Ukrainian military during the battle for Avdeevka. Taking into account the terrain around it, the village is an important stronghold of the Ukrainian defense laying along Karlovka-Kalinovo-Ptichie line. The Ukrainian military attempts to gain advantage of the local water reservoir that should complicate Russian offensive. However, after the main Ukrainian defense in the Avdeevka region was destroyed, the AFU had no time and no means to heavily fortify their positions there. Moreover, the ongoing Russian offensive operation in other directions, including in the Kharkiv region, forced the Ukrainian military command to take reserve units from the Donetsk direction to the north, weakening defense in the Donbass.
Karlovka is located only 13 kilometers from Selidovo, one of the main Ukrainian logistics hubs in the entire Donbass, which is already shelled by Russian artillery.
Russian control of Netailovo seems to be another ‘routine’ tactical victory of the Russian army. However, the ongoing Russian advance to the west allowed to destroy numerous Ukrainian strongholds on the outskirts of Donetsk, that have been fortified by Ukrainian nationalists during the decade of the so-called anti-terrorist operation against the population of the DPR and LPR. The Ukrainian military has no means to build the necessary lines of defense, including due to the corrupt Kiev’s elites. Pushing the Armed Forces of Ukraine away from the outskirts of Donetsk, the Russian army is also securing the lives of civilians in the DPR from the constant terrorist shelling by Ukrainians.
