Mutiny, Escape Attempt In Prisons Hosting ISIS Captives In Northeastern Syria (Video)

On August 12, the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) deployed commandos units near two prisons hosting captives of ISIS in the northeastern Syrian city of al-Hasakah.

According to some sources, the SDF was responding to a mutiny at the Industrial Secondary Prison. ISIS captives started the mutiny there in order to protest against the recent transfer of some of their comrades to other prisons.

Earlier this month, the Syrian Arab News Agency reported the transfer of 40 ISIS captives from the prison to a US base in the southern countryside of al-Hasakah.

Other sources, however, reported that the SDF foiled an escape attempt by ISIS captives in the larger Geweran Prison. The terrorists allegedly planned to escape from the prison via tunnels they managed to dug recently.

The SDF was able to uncover the tunnels under Geweran. AH-64 Apache attack helicopters of the US-led coalition were spotted flying over the prison at the time.

Thousands of ISIS captives are being held inside the Industrial Secondary Prison, the Geweran Prison and several other detention facilities run by the SDF.

The SDF have been struggling to keep ISIS captives behind the bars despite serious support from the US-led coalition. The group has been attempting to send foreigners, who represent a large part of the captives, back for trial in their home countries for several years now, with very little success.
