A mysterious launcher installed inside a regular shipping container and designed to fire the same suite of artillery rockets and ballistic missiles as the M270 Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) and M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) was showcased to President Donald Trump at the United States Army’s Fort Bragg in North Carolina on June 10.
Fort Bragg, which is located near the city of Fayetteville, serves as headquarters for the U.S. Army Special Operations Command. Highly trained units like the Green Berets and the 82nd Airborne are based there.
During his visit to the base, Trump witnessed the U.S. Army demonstrating a missile strike, a helicopter assault and a building raid.
The President was also given demonstrations of various capabilities at the base’s Holland Drop Zone. The containerized launcher appeared in footage from there.
Last year, Military Times posted a video of shared video footage showing the exact same launcher, without providing any details.
The roof of the container housing the launcher is designed to open to one side. It can accommodate two of the same ammunition pods used as the MRLS and HIMARS.
Pods are typically located with six M30/M31 series GMLRS GPS-guided artillery rockets, which have a range of more than 70 kilometers, a single MGM-140 ATACMS tactical ballistic missile with a range between 165 and 300 kilometers depending on the version, or two of the latest PrSM missiles with a range of up to 500 kilometers.
The idea of hiding a missile system in a shipping container was pioneered by Russia with its Club-K system capable of launching Kalibr-type anti-ship and land-attack cruise missiles. This concept was later adopted by many countries, from the U.S. to Iran and China.
While the main purpose of the idea is to covertly deploy weapons for surprise attacks, such compact systems are also easier to deploy in more conventional scenarios. For example, the launcher showcased to Trump or the Club-K system can turn any cargo ship into a heavily-armed warship if needed.
