The Defence Headquarters of the Nigerian Armed Forces said on Sunday that the troops of Operation Lafiya Dole had killed 35 Boko Haram/Islamic States of West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists in clearance operations in Borno State. The operations took place between May 11 and May 22.
According to the military sources, troops of Army Super Camp 6 and 7 conducted a long-range fighting patrol on May 11 and cleared Adzunge and adjoining villages, with additional military operations on May 13 along Pulka-Boko-Kirawa road.
In another operation launched between 19 and 20 May 2020, troops of 7 Division Garrison, 195 and 212 Battalions with Vigilantes confirmed 5 terrorists killed in action.
“Five AK47 rifles, two terrorists’ gun trucks, one anti-aircraft gun, six assorted magazines, 250 rounds of 12.7 mm, 61 rounds of 7.62 mm and two hand grenades were recovered.”
A week earlier, on 18 May, the Nigerian Military claimed that its troops of 130 Battalion killed 20 members of the Boko Haram and Islamic State’s West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists. The development followed a fierce clash at the north-western part of Baga town, also in Borno State. The insurgents, he said, were armed with mortars, rocket-propelled grenades, and small weapons and were on their way to attack villages surrounding Baga when the troops intercepted them and opened fire. Nine soldiers were reported wounded.
The Defence Headquarters of the Nigerian Armed Forces has also claimed that the Air Component of Operation Hadarin Daji has neutralised approximately 200 armed bandits in multiple air strikes in Katsina and Zamfara.
The Coordinator of Defence Media Operations, Major-General John Enenche, in a statement released on Sunday 24 May said the operations were in continuation of the offensive to rid the country of bandits and other criminal elements.
Enenche said that close to 200 bandits were killed in multiple air strikes conducted at Ibrahim Mai’Bai’s Camp in Jibia Local Government Area of Katsina and Kurmin Kura in Zurmi in Zamfara on May 22 and May 23.
He said the air strikes were executed following confirmation that the two locations were being used as hideouts for bandit leaders in the area while also serving as collection points for stolen cattle.
According to the statements, the Nigerian Air Force deployed ground attack aircraft and helicopter gunships for the operation, attacking the two locations in multiple passes, destroying makeshift structures in the camps as well as killing the leaders of the armed group’s camp as well as many of their fighters.
“Human Intelligence sources later confirmed that close to 200 armed bandits were killed in the air strikes at the target locations.”
“The Chief of Air Staff (CAS) … (has) directed that additional assets be deployed to cover Kaduna, Niger, Nasarawa and Kogi States to frustrate any attempt of the bandits to relocate to adjoining states,” he said.
