An officer was killed and two others were wounded as a result of a military shelling that hit a military airport near the town of Arish in Egypt’s North Sinai on December 19, the army spokesman said in a statement on Facebook.
Accordign to the statement, a helicopter was damaged and security forces “dealt with the source of fire”, without elaborating.
The incident took place during a visit of the interior and defense ministers of Egypt to the area. Neither minister was in the attack.
The attack was most likely conducted by the local ISIS branch operating in the region. Egypt is struggling to deal with the militancy in North Sinai, but has still not been able to purge the terrorism in the region.
