More than 100 Palestinians were killed by Israeli fire in Gaza City as they were waiting for food on February 29, right after the health ministry in the enclave announced that the death toll from the horrific war has surpassed 30,000.
30,035 people have been killed in Gaza so far, the ministry, which is run by the Hamas Movement, said in a statement, adding that the number of injured is over 70,457.
Ministry spokesman Ashraf al-Qudra noted that children, women and elderly people accounted for the majority of the victims in the Strip, with many of the victims still trapped under the rubble.
Soon after the latest death toll figures were published, at least 104 Palestinians were killed and 760 were injured when Israeli forces shelled a crowd waiting for humanitarian aid south of Gaza City.
Hungry civilians had swarmed around newly arrived aid trucks in the hope to get food, when Israeli tanks and drones started shooting at the people in al-Rashid Street in western Gaza City.
The government media office in Gaza, also run by Hamas, accused the Israeli military of killing the victims “in cold blood” as Israel was aware of their presence in the area “to obtain food and aid.”
“The occupation had the premeditated intention to commit this horrific massacre,” the office said in a statement.
Meanwhile, the Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned what it said was a cold-blooded “massacre” in Gaza City. The ministry said the attack was part of Israel’s ongoing “genocidal war”. It also called on the international community to “urgently intervene” to forge a ceasefire as “the only way to protect civilians”.
The Israeli military, for its part, claimed that the fatalities occurred as a result of trampling and being struck by the aid trucks.
The military said that an initial investigation found that some Palestinians approached one of its checkpoints in Gaza City overseeing the entry of the aid trucks with soldiers firing warning shots and shooting at the legs of Palestinians who continued to move toward the troops.
The war on Gaza Strip broke out after the October 7 Hamas-led surprise attack on Israel. During the attack some 1,200 Israelis were killed and more than 200 others were captured and taken to the Strip.
The Israeli military has so far occupied vast parts of northern Gaza and some areas in the southern parts of the Strip. Despite international calls for a ceasefire and indirect talks with Hamas to release some 100 remaining Israeli hostages in the Strip, Israel is preparing to expand its offensive by attacking the southern area of Rafah.
More than one million Palestinians -roughly half of Gaza’s population- are said to be taking shelter in Rafah near the border with Egypt. Hamas has already warned that an attack on the region could lead to “tens of thousands” of civilian casualties.
