Palestinian armed factions in the Gaza Strip continue to resist the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), despite facing heavy bombardment.
On March 18, the al-Quds Brigades, the military wing of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad -the second largest faction in Gaza after the ruling Hamas Movement-, released video footage showing its fighters targeting gatherings of Israeli troops in the central part of the Strip with a Soviet-made Malyutka anti-tank guided missile and mortars.
On the very same day, the IDF announced the death of a Staff Sergeant from the Nahal Brigade’s 932nd Battalion. Nevertheless, it said the soldier was killed while taking part in the raid on Shifa Hospital in Gaza city in the northern part of the Strip.
The IDF announced the death of another personal, a Warrant Officer who held a commanding role in the 401st Armored Brigade chief’s forward command team, on March 19. He was also killed in northern Gaza.
The death of the two brought the toll of Israeli troops killed since the start of ground operations in Gaza to 251. More than 1,400 have been wounded so far.
In recent days, the IDF limited its ground operations to the raid on Shifa Hospital. IDF Arabic spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Avichay Adraee said in a press statement on March 20 that Israeli troops and the Shin Bet security service were engaged in precise combat in the medical complex.
Lt. Col. Adraee claimed that the forces had killed more than 90 “saboteurs,” while more than 300 suspects were questioned in the complex, with 160 of them transferred for follow-up investigations.
The spokesman also confirmed that strikes were carried out in the center of the strip and the southern Gazan city of Khan Younis to eliminate “saboteurs.”
Meanwhile, the Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza said on the same day that Israeli fire killed 104 Palestinians and wounded 162 others in the last 24 hours. According to a statement released by the ministry, the latest casualties has brought the death toll in the Strip to 31,923, with 74,096 others wounded.
All in all, Israel is yet to achieve any of the objectives of the war on Gaza. At the same time, it continues to refuse to ceasefire or to withdraw its troops from the Strip.
