The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) acknowledged on June 29 that it had lost two more soldiers during fighting in the northern Gaza Strip.
The two slain soldiers were serving in the ranks of the Paratroopers Brigade’s 890th Battalion and the 7th Armored Brigade’s 77th Battalion.
The soldiers were killed in separate incidents in Gaza City’s Shejaiya area on June 28, where the IDF launched a new “pinpoint operation” against the Hamas Movement and other Palestinian armed factions earlier in the week.
The two deaths brought the toll of slain Israeli troops in the IDF’s ground operations in Gaza and along its border to 318. The toll includes a police officer killed in a hostage rescue mission. A civilian Defense Ministry contractor has also been killed in the Strip.
More than 1,977 other troops have been wounded in the Strip, so far. Some are reportedly still in a life-threatening condition.
Despite facing heavy Israeli strikes, Hamas and its allies continue to put on fierce resistance in Shejaiya and nearby areas in Gaza City.
On June 29, Hamas’ military wing, the al-Qassam Brigades, released video footage showing its fighters targeting Israeli military vehicles and troops with rocket propelled grenades and shelling IDF gatherings in Gaza City’s Tell al-Hawa area using rockets and mortars. The footage also shows a drone that was downed and captured by the group’s fighters.
From its side, the IDF released on June 30 video footage showing some of the recent strikes that hit “dozens” of Hamas sites in Shejaiya amid the ongoing operation there.
It’s worth noting that the Israeli war on Gaza has so far claimed the lives of 37,834 Palestinians, most of whom were women and children, according to the Hamas-run health ministry in the Strip. More than 86,858 others have been wounded so far.
Despite failing to achieve any of its objectives, Israel is showing no sign of winding down its war on Gaza. In fact, the IDF appears to be preparing to escalate not only in the Strip, but also against Hezbollah in Lebanon.
