Putin, Erdogan Agree To Establish Demilitarized Zone In Syria's Idlib

AFP 2018 / Mohamed Haj Kadour

Russia and Turkey have agreed to establish a “demilitarized zone” between militants and government troops in the Syrian province of Idlib, President Vladimir Putin stated following a face-to-face meeting with Turkey’s Recep Tayyip Erdogan on September 17.

“We’ve focused on the situation in the province of Idlib, considering presence of large militant groups and their infrastructure there,” Putin stated following the talks. “We’ve agreed to create a demilitarized zone between the government troops and militants before October 15. The zone will be 15-20 km deep, with full withdrawal of hardline militants from there, including the Jabhat Al-Nusra [now known as Hayat Tahrir al-Sham].”

Putin said that all heavy weaponry, including battle tanks and artillery, will be withdrawn from the zone before October 10. He further added that the zone will be patrolled by Turkish and Russian military units. He also revealed that the agreement has a “general” support from the Syrian government.

It’s expected that roads between Aleppo and Hama, and Aleppo and Latakia must be reopened for transit traffic before the end of the year.

According to Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu, the details will be agreed with the Syrian side in the upcoming hours.

Everything that

– brings Idlib under the control of Damascus – gets the Turks out of Syria – brings the terrorists to justice or out of the country

is acceptable.

Anything else would be Russia giving away Syrian land for it’s own gains and should be treated as such by Syria and it’s true allies.

Pipin Kratky

Yes, but the question is how high is the price for achieving this right now. Turkey and US made the price too high. Putin wisely backed off, but only temporally.

putinbeater

putin,

wisely,

oxymoron :DD

putin sold out syria. i remeber and have olso vidos his speeches from autumn 2015. in that time there were no yanks and turks in syria. putins mistake, that they are there.

DONT TRUST RUSKIES!!!

Tudor Miron

Yeah! We should trust you Solomoisha insteed, right?

putinbeater

better

al quaida

There were no “yanks and turks” in Syria (that we know of) in 2015 because their proxy jihadi armies were doing the job and Assad was on the back foot. The Russian intervention reversed the tide of the war and prevented a black flag from being raised over Damascus.

Rob

There are US and NATO army in Idlib with large beards that disguised themselves as terrorists. As they have disguised themselves as Israel in Palestine.

Rob

Fake news, Propaganda and bullshit news. I don’t trust these news at all. They twest the news.

Spit

I feel that the Turks have approached the Russians with some kind of Negotiation… I think this is Intriguing.

Southfront is bread. Thank You.

Feudalism Victory

Syria retains the sovereign right to attack any armed formation occupying its territory.

But they wont because without russian military assistance they dont have enough power to win.

Iran wont fight with syria against turkey either.

Without russian assitance they wouldve been routed in 2015 and thered be a libyan mess in there. And assad exiled or dead him and his family brutally murdered.

No assad is content to hold onto what he has now. Content to leave the occupied parts of syria to be brought back by diplomacy and expertly applied force.

Or not. They let the golan heights go pretty easy.

Barba_Papa

But they were on their own with the Golan Heights against a state with unlimited Western backing. The Turkish situation is more fluid and complex, and now Russia is actively negotiating for Syria. Once Russian diplomats finally convince Erdogan he has more to gain by ditching Idlib then holding it, it will be taken, and the presence of American goons in ships off shore won’t matter that much any more.

Prince Teutonic

So this means no offensive!? This is a bad deal for Syria…

Icarus Tanović

Definitely.

Neurasth

Its atrociously bad. there has to be something planned underneath that we arent seeing. I just cant believe Putin would agree to such a horrible deal.

putinbeater

putin is traitor. always was. slowly learn the facts

Merijn

Western Politicians are Traitors & Should be Convicted for War Crimes..Crimes against Humanity, Treason & Hanged…..

putinbeater

also

Merijn

Putin did pretty alright up till now…. at least he dared to help Syria…which otherwise would have been a Headchopper-Paradise….even if he walks out now… he still helped the Syrians…

putinbeater

putin did good, util he stopped tabqa offensive. after meeting with obama in ankara. since that time he has quite another syrian politics

Merijn

Isn’t it the SAA, Iran & Hezbollah who are the Boots on the Ground?

Neurasth

I am in shock and denial just as you are brother. However lets not delude ourselves. The Russians sold us out and backed down from the offensive.

What’s most likely going to happen now is total partition of Syria just like the jews wanted since day one.

There’s still slim hope that this is just a trick and smokescreen. I’m open to be surprised. But from every other angle it looks like this is the end. We lost.

Merijn

If they back off…we all lost… because in my opinion it means they all cooperated from the very beginning, just a trick….and Iran might be next….

Ronald

A 15 to 20 km demilitarized strip along the Turkish border ? The article is sadly lacking in any details, which will come shortly, likely after Syria OK’s the deal.

Merijn

IsraHell was out for an all out War… they don’t seem to like this Deal…which could be a positive sign…

Merijn

IsraHell doesn’t seem to be to happy with the Agreement between Erdogan & Putin…. https://russia-insider.com/en/syria-under-attack-missiles-sea-hours-after-russian-turkish-deal-call-idlib-offensive/ri24770

Merijn

Or the French Fired the Missiles…but IsraHell is trying to escalate the situation…because they really needed the international community to go to War with Syria… the Idlib-Erdogan-Putin-Deal put an End to that threat for now…. https://sputniknews.com/middleeast/201809181068115950-russia-registered-missile-launches/

Ivan Freely

Where did you get this info from?

putinbeater

together with russian air support

Merijn

The Russians took a Hit…IsraHell wants this War real Bad…so maybe the deal between Putin & Erdogan took the Stinger out… and now these Western Devils will try everything to get their War…if it was up to me they got it…

Neurasth

Agreed. He did good until now and I was really starting to believe Assad would live true to his promise of reuniting whole of Syria. Unfortunately this deal seems to be reality.

I think we have lost the war.

Merijn

I have little trust in Leaders anyway…in the end they are always “the Elite”…. Change should come from the common people….for Syrians there should be peace…and the Land should be returned…either by Negotiations or by Force…anything Less can be considered Treason….there should be Unity in the Middle East…to Kick the U.S. the U.K., IsraHell & Wahhabism Out…

MADE MAKER

RUSSIA & TURKEY AGREE DEMILITARIZED ZONE IN SYRIA ..AMERICA

AJ

Statement on RT says – “We’ve agreed to create a demilitarized zone between the government troops and militants before October 15. The zone will be 15-20 km deep, with full withdrawal of hardline militants from there, including the Jabhat Al-Nusra [now known as Hayat Tahrir al-Sham].” It looks like it will end up as a Turkish controlled enclave less the crazies. Question is will Turkey remove them when they refuse to leave.

TiredOfBsToo

Buffer zone should be 15-20 km on the Turkish side of the border.

alejoeisabel

Turkey wants the head choppers in Idlib. That is why Turkey is protecting them. Now, the US/Israel see Putin as weak.

Merijn

Kick the Headchoppers out…. good…Seperate Civilians From The Headchoppers…so that the SAA & Allies can Kill All Headchoppers…Shell’m into Oblivion…

Lupus

WTF!

RichardD

It looks like the beginning of a phased withdrawal from Idlib by the regime change terrorists, and doesn’t cover the other terrorist held areas:

“Both leaders did not mention the Hama, Latakia, and Aleppo governorates, where there is still a considerable number of jihadist rebels still active.”

– Putin and Erdogan agree to establish demilitarized zone in Idlib –

https://www.almasdarnews.com/article/breaking-putin-and-erdogan-agree-to-establish-demilitarized-zone-in-idlib/

peacelover

Whats happening it isn’t clear. Little better proceedings. Emerging chances for peace really. But what about the takfeeri terrorists? What is going to happen in those areas instead of that demilitarized 20 km zone?

peacelover

Idlib must be cleared from those terrible beasts. The Good solution was a full shooting attack from three sides towards idlib. Anyway hope for better

You can call me Al

Not again. Has Putin not learnt from the past ?. Shear madness in my view.

Promitheas Apollonious

obviously not.

putinbeater

se you? i was right. all the time. and the most bitter thing will only come.

as

Yea keeping idlib under control is way outside of Turkish military capability. Their army is as reliable as the French army.

putinbeater

turkish army has large numbers but low quality

peacelover

U r misunderstanding and underestimating him.

northerntruthseeker .

I am like everyone else… I wanted to see the SAA attack and regain the territory that is rightfully theirs…

However, in the light of the continuing insanity of the criminal American “leadership” that wants to make sure their rebels and “terrorists” in Idlib survive, this may be the best choice for the alternative was to see the fight further escalate into WW3….

And yes, many readers are right that this “agreement” was made without the Syrian government’s input and it goes against every rule of a nation’s sovereignty… NO outside power should be able to make this type of decision for that decision should always rightfully belong to the Syrian people alone..

Lets see where this goes…. This may save the lives of countless civilians…. And yet it gives the psychos in the US a sense of victory in allowing their fraudulent operatives and mercenaries that have been murdering thousands of innocent people the ability to survive and to make hell on Syria again sometime in the future…

Promitheas Apollonious

and how the decision of the russians is any different than the ones the fukus been pushing for? Because with all the good will I have for the russians and I have a big family in russia and always supported their move to keep intact each nations sovereignty, what I see now and what I been hearing is happening not from the sites or so called alternative media that in reality is anything but that, but from our business international contacts is the compromises russia did at the expense of what is supposed, they went to save.

I want to be wrong but on the other hand professionalism, does not allow me space for emotion here and my analysis of this situation, I pray is wrong, but the evidence is too overwhelming and also contradictory, with what they claim and what they establish as matter of fact on the land.

It is time population each to be each for is own and fight to clean their countries exactly as the houthis are doing.

Promitheas Apollonious

save thousand of civilians with them to be under the control of isis and turkey? What they manage to do, russians with their brilliant plan is change not only the demographics of syria but also to give it as present to turkey.

The real war is just beginning and if the russians make the next step that I know is coming base on what information we get in lately, then to my book they no better than the ones they allegedly went there to stop and fight against.

putinbeater

another paid russian troll

willyvandamme

This agreement will get nowhere. As if al Qaeda would accept such a thing.

Icarus Tanović

But this is awful, this is horrible, this is Armageddon of Syria, Palestine, Lebanon, Iran all normal Muslims, all normal people in the World. This is disastrous.

alejoeisabel

The Al Qaeda terrorists will be re-branded by Turkey with new Turkish Army uniforms. Putin blinked. Turkey, Israel, and United States emboldened. This spells the fragmentation of Syria, the success of Israel’s desire to further solidify its theft of the resource rich Syrian Golan Heights.

Neurasth

That is right. In light of all the achievements scored by the SAA this year, it would appear that they unfortunately lost the bigger picture. We lost the war, the jews won and got what they wanted.

Tudor Miron

Same as most of you, I would love to see rapid and successful operation that would liberate Idlib from terrorists. But I would suggest to not jump with conclusions at this point in time. Let see how it unfolds within a month or so.

Neurasth

You are right. There has to be something underneath the table that we arent seeing. Remember in the past, there were many occasions in which we were disappointing by russian strategy, only to then see entire cities liberated in massive turn of events later on.

You can call me Al

This does free up thousands of troops to cleanse the DaZ dessert regions and even encroach to the East of the Euphrates + of course it pushes all the fighting factions closer together; gee I wonder what could go wrong (or right) there. Maybe Turkey and their paid vermin can even move further along the Northern border and have many a skirmish with the Kurds.

I think “Tudor Miron” and yours are the only two comments I have seen today (so far) that puts the move into any perspective. Thanks and cheers.

Neurasth

I am trying my best Al, but the situation is still looking very grim to me if I can be totally honest.

It could unfold either ways. Lets put it in perspective: what has changed compared to how the situation was before the military buildup?

I think the changes can be seen as positive. The highways will be opened and relative security will be restored. If the jihadis ever attack again, they SAA can still launch an assault in Idlib.

I’m still afraid of balkanization, which is what most people immidiately thought upon reading the news (me included) but we might see development.

You can call me Al

I totally agree with you and at first I was in a state of shock + so disappointed, but reading other comments, yes good and bad; but as stated above, let us give it a month or two.

putinbeater

such neurotics like oyu are always ready to eat each bullshit of soviet propaganda :DDD

You can call me Al

Christ, are we back in the 1980s ?; damn, that vodka was good.

putinbeater

you should not drink so much

You can call me Al

You should keep up with history – soviet propaganda ??

putinbeater

sure. similar was in 1985-1990, when gorbathev was the tsar. underneath was that ruskies gave up cold war, warsaw pact.

Neurasth

I was hoping this ‘new’ Russia would be something different than the kike infested USSR. Time is slowly proving my impression to be wrong.

putinbeater

unfortunately the same shits, same ideology. a grew up on such iditisms, that few miney fir soviet army is enough to resist america and nato. i saw the result. now the same lies. the fact is, the russian economy is weak (weakar than the former ussr economy, if i compare the weapon production capacity), and 47 billion dollars / year is not enough te be a significant player. russia has not enough money to produce su-57, not enough money to buy enough armata tanks. russia had not enough money for stationig 100+ aircrafts in syria. that is the reason, why do they what thaey do. problem is, that they try to bluff and bring disaster to allied countries. because the enemies of russia knw exactly, which capacities and abilities have russians and know precisely, which lines will they never cross. and now russians are humiliated every month in syria. russia has lost a lot of with this policy.

Sencer

Rapid and successfull operation next to Turkish borders , with all thoese guns piled up there , and western warships waiting at the edge of Syrian coastal waters…

Tudor Miron

Yes. I think that allowing Erdogan to save his face was a large part of Putin’s decision. That fact that Russian MPs will participate in patrolling Idlib is very interesting. Overall – situation is extremely complicated and I’m not ready to have a final opinion on this issue. As I said – lets see how it unfolds.

putinbeater

you betrayaed friends. again,. nothing new in cremlin.

Sencer

I dont think Putin is someone who cares about the face of others. Some people were telling since months that South and East of M4-M5 roads would be cleared and jihadis would move to western Idlib. This 15 km safety zone exactly does the same.

Tudor Miron

As far as I know Putin does care about interests of his counterparts in terms of that he doesn’t work in a “one way traffic” kind of scenario that is a trademark of western civilisation. Keeping Turkey on the right side is an important issue.

as

How it unfold ? Turkey won’t be able to implement their sides of the agreement or never planned to. Russia would complained about them like before without serious responds from Turkey side. SAA would continue amass their forces around while clashing with the militants on the outskirts of Idlib area. Israel and its serf would emboldened by lack of serious repercussions towards their belligerence. It’s way overdue but i agree USA were very dangerously volatile, Turkey wouldn’t be able to fix their standings with the US with their strong stance against Israeli aggression on Palestinian and on Kurdish forces backing but they under erdogan wouldn’t want to part with them yet if not ever. Idlib is a gone cases for them because they wouldn’t be able to oppose HTS. It’s annexation wouldn’t happen. At the same time they can’t leave NATO no matter how abusive their relationship with it because joining axis of resistance would place them at the bottom of their alliances.

putinbeater

hello, KGB-troll!!

Tudor Miron

Solomoisha, you still affraid of KGB? They got more serious things to worry about than an annoying fly.

putinbeater

no boy, i am not afraid of kgb, fsv, gru, red army, etc. we sent you home, you losers! :DDD

Tudor Miron

Brave Solomoisha kicking KGB left right and center :)

putinbeater

you paid troll, you are melting under western missile attavk in syria, just now. this is the hour of truth about your rocket armys :DDDD

1691

The commentators on RT have more intelligence than those on SF but then, here we are dealing with the hypocrite jews. Of course, they want blood and bombs. You’ll get them at the right time and please, spare me your concern about Syria. I know, your dreams of more stolen land have been shattered. Deal with it.

Tudor Miron

I wouldn’t go as far as saying that commentators on RT and SF are better or worse. Thing is that we live in a culture of “instant gratification” and that shows. Situation is extremely complicated and as in a boxing match you give some and you get some. Some times it requires to take a shot in order to deliver your own. Ability to take a punch and not get discouraged is not common. As I said – too early to jump to conclusions. I prefer to wait and see what happens in a little longer run.

PS: I assume that it was not me that you mean when posting “your dreams of more stolen land have been shattered.”?

1691

Of course not. It was meant for the people attacking you. You are right about IQ capacity of commentators but, tonight, for this article we have the representatives of the mentally sick overexcited and ah, shame, so sorry that there won’t be a blood bath.

You can call me Al

That is just the frustration talking; the demilitarised zone + the shot down Russian plane in 1 day; has not been the best day for us that want peace after an Assad victory.

neil barron

Is the statement of “instant gratification” for any particular Sate or the area in question or the world in general ? We here where I live have been saying that for many years and it doesn’t work that way kiddies.

Vince Dhimos

The commentators here are smarter but the ones on RT are heavily censored.

1691

Yes, from Hell Aviv.

The Farney Fontenoy

Rubbish. Russia blinked, Putin’s a coward, Erdogan’s a hero, and every Syrian has been betrayed.

putinbeater

russian, liar, russian, traitor, russian, loser, …

Neurasth

What a f*7cking disaster. What the heck? Do the Russians want to hand over Syria to Israel or what?

putinbeater

Putin continuous in betraying Assad. Assad is pissing on ruskies and turkies.

https://twitter.com/leithfadel/status/1041745079814242305

go Assad go, and grenade for liar Pootin!!!

btw., who gave right for these two animalfuckers to decide about syria???

ruskies, go home, ural is your countryside!

Neurasth

Patience my friend. I am very disappointed too, infact if this deal is fully implemented, then I would think we straight up lost the entire war today. But, there is a slight chance Putin has a strategy we arent seeing yet.

Give it a couple weeks, things might change. I have faith.

Neurasth

Bro go see whats happening in Latakia. Russian S-400 fired. Something is going on.

putinbeater

i am curious, wheter was really fired?

Neurasth

There is visual confirmation of explosions

RichardD

They don’t shoot at drones with S-400s.

putinbeater

this does not mean, it was s-400

Neurasth

Turns out it was Syrian S-200.

putinbeater

this sounds realistic

Neurasth

Missiles are coming from the sea side. Its either kike jets shooting at imaginary Iranians, or a NATO strike.

RichardD

Do you have a link for this?

Neurasth

Explosions heard in Homs too.

Neurasth

More reports of S-400 fired.

RichardD

AMN is reporting S-200s, not S-400s:

“Minutes ago, the Syrian military activated its air defenses after a number of potential missiles/drones swarmed the provinces of Latakia, Homs, and Tartous.

According to one source, the attack was carried out by a number of armed drones that belonged to the jihadist rebels; however, another military source said that while it is still unclear, they believe it may be a foreign entity.

What is known at the moment is that the Syrian military has deployed several S-200 anti-aircraft missiles to defend the provinces.”

These are possible borders for the DMZ. Russian observation posts are red, Turkish are blue. Which includes opening the Lattakia Aleppo and Hama Aleppo highways by the end of the year.

This is very good news for everyone who loves peace and humane governance.

A terrible blood bath has been avoided.

A 15km de-escalation zone will protect all parties.

Putin is a realist, a pragmatist, and a Russian patriot.

Now he is attaining the status of peace maker, and if his truce holds, he should get a Nobel.

putinbeater

A 15km de-escalation zone will protect all parties.

will protect terrorsts. i wis to wladimir pootin, that thiose johadist kill hos whole family and relatives!

Jon

PB: surely there will have to be a Russian security presence in the de-escalation zone. But think of the bloodshed avoided that would have occurred had Putin approved the offensive: thousands of civilian deaths and hundreds of thousands of refugees.

Surely the contesting parties can reach terms for a lasting peace in which the Syrian people, regardless of tribe or creed, can live side by side in peace, which ever governing authority controls the various areas.

RichardD

“Suchi, SANA-Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Monday that he discussed with President of the Turkish regime Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Sochi the situation in Syria, particularly in Idleb.

“We expressed Moscow’s concern over the danger represented by the presence of terrorist organizations in Idleb on Aleppo and the Russian Air base in Hmeimem,” Putin said at a press conference with Erdogan.

He announced that agreement has been made to establish a deep demilitarized zone in Idlib region by Oct. 15 and be 15-20 kilometers (9-12 miles) deep, adding that “this stance is supported by the Syrian government.””

– Putin, Erdogan: Demilitarized zone in Idleb –

https://www.sana.sy/en/?p=147182

wwinsti

This has *cease fire* violations written all over it. There’s absolutely no way for Erdogan to control all those jehadist flavors of the month club affiliates in Idlib.

Richard M

There isn’t enough data yet to say what this means. Those commenters saying “this is great” and also those saying “this is awful and a betrayal” had an agenda to push before this announcement was made.

John Brown

No Richard M the Oct 15 deadline gives the Russians plenty of time to bomb the crap out of the militants. It will also be territory Syria won’t have to fight for as the Israeli terrorists will have to pull back and Russia has more time to greatly strengthen Syrian air defenses. The fact that Israel attacked today in Latakia in a temper tantrum proves this was a good deal to make for Syria. If the militants don’t cooperate, they get hammered anyway. Nothing to lose.

Spit

“Putin, Erdogan Agree” I thought long and hard. about what exactly does “Putin, Erdogan Agree” When it comes to politics, every agreement means many things all at the same time. But One thing I can get out of this message “Putin, Erdogan Agree” Its not about agreement, this is about understanding. The Turks Want a piece of Syria and the Russians are reluctant to betray an ally.

We all know what turkey has offered the Russians. This is What I see.

BL

Unless there are secret backroom deals that we are unaware of, this deal looks terrible on the surface. Let’s analyze the arguments of those who say this is a good deal:

If Putin’s goal was to avoid escalation with the West all this will do is make Russia look weak and embolden the Zionist West to push harder and further. If Putin is still delusional enough to believe the Zionist West will settle for anything less than total world domination then the entire world is in danger. Zionists don’t understand compromise and they never stop pushing their total world domination agenda. They will see this incident as a victory for their escalation strategy, which will encourage them to use it more often.

If Putin’s goal was to satisfy Turkish concerns and improve their relationship with them, this will also in my opinion backfire. The Zionist West will use this example as proof of the effectiveness of Turkey-West united front against Russia. Turkey will be reminded that they were able to reach their goals only when they made a joint effort with the West. Turkey will be even less likely to give up their NATO alliance.

This is not the first time Russia has unnecessarily backed off only to be forced back in to the conflict relatively soon after. Every time Russia backs off it makes the eventual future effort needed to finish the job even more costly. I really hope I’m wrong and misreading the situation. Hopefully Putin is seeing something that I’m not and this is just a temporary delay perhaps to give Turkey time to peacefully remove the terrorists and avoid an orc rush into their territory.
