Rebels Captured Hama, Syria's Fifth Largest City

ILLUSTRATIVE IMAGE

On December 5, the Syrian army announced its withdrawal from the central city of Hama after amid fighting with rebel forces.

In an official statement, the General Command of the Army and Armed Forces said that over the past few days, Syrian troops have “fought fierce battles” to repel the “violent and successive” attacks launched by militants.

The statement added that the intensification of the fighting and the rising death toll prompted the military to withdraw its units.

According to the official statement, the decision was made in order “to preserve the lives of civilians” and not to involve them in battles. It also said that the militants suffered “heavy losses” during the clashes.

The military added that it “will continue to carry out its national duty in reclaiming the areas entered by terrorist organizations.”

As of 14:00 local time, the city of Hama de-facto fell into the hands of rebel forces.

Earlier on the same day, SouthFront reported that rebels intensified attacks on the city (LINK TO THE ARTICLE):

Militants led by al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) renewed their attack on the city of Hama in central Syria on December 5 morning as a part of their ongoing large-scale offensive against the Syrian Arab Army (SAA), codenamed Operation Deterrence of Aggression.

The militants attacked Hama from the eastern, northern and northeastern direction, mainly targeting the strategic Zayn al-Abidin mount and the al-Mizrab brigade, which leads into the eastern districts of the city.

While media sources linked to HTS and its allies alleged that the militants broke through the defenses of the SAA, a military official told the state-run Syrian Arab News Agency that the army was still in control of the entire city, including the al-Mizrab brigade.

Syrian and Russian warplanes were targeting militants in the northern Hama countryside and killing “dozens” of them, the unnamed official said.

“All our forces, with their vehicles and equipment deployed on the outskirts of the city, are positioned at advanced points and form impregnable defensive lines against any terrorist infiltration attempt,” he added.

Overnight, the SAA repelled a similar attack on Hama city, ambushing some 300 militants, including members of HTS elite units, close to Zayn al-Abidin.

Operation Deterrence of Aggression, which was launched by HTS and its allies on November 27, saw the militants capturing some 800 square kilometers in northern and northwestern Syria, including the city of Aleppo, since its beginning on November 27.

Despite taking heavy losses, the militants will not likely back down around Hama city as they seek to capitalize on their early successes in Aleppo and Idlib.

getting rid of everyone who could fight properly, like that wagner guy, is really paying off now.

instead of finishing fights and winning actual military victories russia always resorts to half measures followed by negotiations.

this hot mess in syria is the outcome of that kind of strategic thinking.

any additional truces in ukraine will produce the same sorry results.

why did the russians need to make such a big scene in syria? they refuse to adequately support the iranians or the syrians.

after moscow destroyed wagner everything wagner was doing in syria and africa fell apart. since there is no more wagner there is no need to be in africa and since there is no need to be in africa there is no need to prop up this half measured crap storm in syria.

another total failure diplomatically and politically

turkey gets 33% of syria, russia 99.99% of ukraine.

russia needs to learn one simple lesson, the winner of the war gets what they want.

the ruling class of russia has strange ideas about war and “partners” which is why all of this is turning out like a hot mess.

Dick Von D'Astard

is syria really that important to russia? i’d suggest it isn’t. more important to turkey, iran, israel and arab league. if the cia/mi6/mossad wants chaos in syria, lebanon, jordan, then i’d grant them the 3 little wishes and see how it turns out for them.

i dont thinking people relies how important syria is for russia. they have the only port to access the mediterranean sea and if they lose it russia will be closed off. not only that, if they lose syria then the usa and zio plan is next lebanon and then iraq and at the end iran. if these countries falls then russia is totally cut of in the south and that is what they are planning for, because then the next step would be to divide russia into 3 to 4 countries..

syria is dead, europe must build walls and prevent this honorless lot of barbarians and thieves from reaching our lands, let syrians flood erdoganistan since they are the same bunch of zionist-controlled filth. russia should nuke syria so nothing is left for zionists and erdoganists. not saying that russia isn’t also to blame since they agreed to the idiotic 202 agreement with erdoganistan.

china must see what’s happening and quickly militarize, obviously without china the world will be consumed by the zionist scourge.

damascus is the next to fall. israel, us, turkey destroying syria, there is no hope left..

it looks like the syrian army is a zero to the left. i consider that all this mess is due to too much trust and complacency of russia with turkey (nato member) and kurds (usa puppets) .

the syrian army is capable of fighting hard with great tenacity. it has a record of doing so since the start of the western backed terrorist invasion in 2011, and before then. for this to have happened, there must have been a collapse in morale, probably as a result of corruption at higher levels. people may have been simply bought off by the cia/ mi6 etc. that seems to be the most likely explanation. but the situation can be turned round quickly.
