A United States diplomatic facility in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, came under attack, a U.S. embassy spokesperson said in a statement on September 11.
“At approximately 23:00 on Tuesday, September 10, there was an attack at the Baghdad Diplomatic Services Compound, a U.S. diplomatic facility,” the statement reads. “Fortunately, there are no reported casualties, and we are assessing the damage and its cause. Our assessment is ongoing.”
Security sources told Reuters two rockets landed close to U.S. forces stationed near Baghdad airport at the Camp Victory base.
Kataib Hezbollah, one of the main Iran-backed armed factions in Iraq, said in a statement that the timing of the attack was clearly designed to disrupt a visit to Iraq by Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian that began on September 11. It called on Iraqi security forces to investigate the attack and to determine who was responsible.
The U.S. maintains a force of some 2,500 troops in Iraq, supposedly to help local security forces fight the remaining cells of ISIS.
Iran-backed armed factions in Iraq have targeted U.S. forces in the country and in neighboring Syria more than 180 times since the outbreak of the Israeli war on the Palestinian enclave of the Gaza Strip, which is backed by Washington. The attacks slowed down in recent months.
The attack on the U.S. diplomatic facility in Baghdad also came following reports of a near deal that would see U.S. troops withdrawn from Iraq within two years.
