The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), a detachment of the Royal Navy, reported on June 16 that another merchant vessel was attacked near Yemen.
In an advisory notice, UKMTO said that a vessel 40 nautical miles south of the Yemeni port of al-Mukha had reported two explosions nearby, adding that the vessel and its crew were safe and proceeding to their next port of call.
“Authorities are investigating,” the agency said. “Vessels are advised to transit with caution and report any suspicious activity to UKMTO.”
The Houthis (Ansar Allah) have not yet acknowledged the attack reported by UKMTO, though it typically takes them hours to issue a claim.
Over the past week, the Iranian-backed group attacked several merchant vessels, one of which is currently sinking in the Red Sea and the other was abandoned by its crew in the Gulf of Aden after a series of fires. .
The Houthis have attacked dozens of vessels affiliated with Israel or owned by the United States and the UK in the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden, the Arabian Sea, the Indian Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea since November in response to the Israeli war and siege on the Palestinian enclave of the Gaza Strip.
In addition, the group launched dozens of drones and missiles at the southernmost Israeli city of Eilat and shot down six American-made combat drones over Yemen and nearby waters.
Since January, U.S. and the UK have carried out hundreds of strikes against Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen in an attempt to deter the group and degrade its offensive capabilities, but to no avail.
A recent report by the US Defense Intelligence Agency alleged that the Houthis’ repeated anti-shipping attacks affected the interests of 65 countries and 29 major energy and shipping firms. The attacks also led to a 90% decline in container shipping through the Red Sea between December and February, according to the report.
