Russia has begun deploying an upgraded version of its Garpiya drone with a range of 1,200 kilometers and a combined warhead payload of 25 kilograms, Ukraine’s military intelligence agency said November 2.
The Garpiya-2 features a substantially redesigned airframe compared with earlier versions, which were initially developed as inexpensive radar decoys intended to overwhelm Ukrainian air defense systems. Russia subsequently adapted the platform for reconnaissance and attack missions, adding satellite navigation, digital communications equipment and optical sensors.
The enlarged Garpiya-2 has a wingspan of 3 meters and a fuselage measuring 2.6 meters. Its redesigned 63-liter fuel tank gives it a stated operational range of 1,200 kilometers. The fuel system is divided into separate compartments, while propulsion is provided by a two-cylinder, two-stroke engine described by Ukrainian intelligence as effectively half of the powerplant used in the Iranian-designed Shahed-136.
The drone carries a 10-kilogram OFZBCh-10 high-explosive fragmentation and incendiary warhead, supplemented by separate modules containing an incendiary gel mixture. Together, these components bring the total combat payload to 25 kilograms, according to the intelligence agency.
Its onboard electronics include an updated flight control computer, a 12-channel Kometa satellite navigation receiver designed to resist jamming, and a digital mesh modem. A video processing module, known as Sosiska, is also installed, alongside a dual-lens camera system designed to detect incoming Ukrainian interceptor drones.
Ukrainian defense technology adviser Serhii Beskrestnov, known as Flash, first disclosed the operational use of the enlarged Garpiya variant in August, highlighting its increased dimensions.
The latest Ukrainian intelligence report indicates that the Garpiya-2 has been optimized to attack inflammable targets, like fuel storage facilities.
