The Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) announced on November 11 that it had foiled an elaborate Ukrainian-British plot to hijack a MiG-31 fighter jet armed with a Kinzhal hypersonic ballistic missile.
In a statement, the press service of the security service said that the plot was orchestrated by Ukraine’s military intelligence service (HUR) in coordination with the United Kingdom’s MI6 intelligence agency.
“In order to hijack the aircraft, Ukrainian military intelligence officers tried to recruit Russian pilots, offering $3 million. The special services then planned to send the jet with the Kinzhal missile to the area where NATO’s largest airbase in southeastern Europe is located, in the Romanian city of Constanta, where it could be shot down by air defenses,” the FSB said. “The measures taken have thwarted the plans of the Ukrainian and UK intelligence services to carry out a large-scale provocation.”
The MiG-31 pilot who was the main target of the plot said that he was contacted last year by a man who introduced himself as Sergey Lugovsky, a researcher for the open-source investigative group Bellingcat, which is funded by the UK and other Western governments.
Lugovsky initially sought consultations on military related issues, but later offered money in exchange for defection, according to the pilot.
After the pilot declined, a Ukrainian agent using the name Aleksandr approached the navigator of the fighter jet, offering the $3 million and a foreign passport in exchange for directing the plane to fly to Romania.
In response to the plot, the Russian Aerospace Forces (VKS) carried out a strike with Kinzhal missiles against Ukraine’s main electronic intelligence center and the Starokostiantynov air base, according to the FSB.
“In response to the provocation, on November 9-10 of this year, the Russian Aerospace Forces struck the Main Electronic Intelligence Center of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine in Brovary, Kiev Region, and the Starokostiantyniv airfield in the Khmelnytskyi Region, where the notorious F-16s are stationed, with the use of Kinzhal hypersonic missiles,” the service said in a statement.
Since the start of the special military operation in Ukraine, Russian security services foiled multiple plots aimed at hijacking VKS warplanes, including one involving a Tu-22M3 strategic bomber and another involving a Mi-8MTPR-1 electronic warfare helicopter.
Bellingcat investigator Christo Grozev, a Bulgarian-born journalist, was accused by the FSB of being involved in one of the plots from 2022. Grozev said at the time that he was embedded with Ukrainian intelligence officers as a documentary filmmaker and claimed that his text messages were forged.
In 2023, Russian pilot Maksim Kuzminov defected to Ukraine, landing his Mi-8AMTSh helicopter behind the front lines with the HUR’s help. Two of the other crew members, unaware of his plan, were killed upon landing. Kuzminov was assassinated a year later in Spain. He was reportedly shot then run over in the city of shot and run over in Villajoyosa, where he was living under a new identity and with a Ukrainian passport.
The latest failed plot is especially concerning as it shows that Ukraine is no longer seeking to hijack VKS warplanes to score a media victory, but rather to provoke a confrontation between Russia and NATO. The MI6 involvement in this plot is, of course, not surprising considering that the UK has been working tirelessly to prolong the conflict in Ukraine from the start.
