Project 22800 was developed by Almaz Central Marine Design Bureau JSC (St. Petersburg) and is aimed as a replacement for the Russian Navy of project 21631 Buyan-class corvette, developed by Zelenodolsk Design Bureau (JSC) (construction of the latter is limited to 12 units so far).

The construction of the newest ship carried out under a contract concluded by the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation for the construction of six ships of this project for the Pacific Fleet.

In July 2019, two guided missile corvettes of this project: “Rzhev” and “Udomlya” were laid at PJSC Amur Shipbuilding Plant in Komsomolsk-on-Amur. They are expected to enter service after 2020. The lead ship of project 22800 is the Mytishchi guided missile corvette.

In 2019, two other guided missile corvettes were laid, but in the Zelenodolsk plant. The first one was the Tucha, and it was laid on February 26th, while the second one was Typhoon, laid in 2019.

Finally, two of the Project 22800 guided missile corvettes – the Kozelsk and Okhotsk were laid at the More Shipyard in Feodosia, Crimea.
