On October 21, the Russian military advanced in several areas in the Kharkiv direction, most notably in the city of Kupyansk, despite facing resistance from Kiev forces.
The Sever [North] Group of Forces expanded its control in Vovchansk, capturing new territories to the west of the settlement. Russian troops reached Synelnykove, with preliminary reports indicating that the settlement was being stormed.
From Synelnykove, the troops could flank remaining Ukrainian positions in the southern part of Vovchansk, and sever the route linking the settlement with Bilyi Kolodyaz.
Meanwhile around Milove, the Sever Group of Forces also expanded its control, making gains near Ambarne, located to the southwest of the settlement, and Odradne, right to the south of it. No breakthrough is to be expected there anytime soon, however.
Moving more to the south in Kharkiv, the Zapad [West] Group of Forces made additional gains in Kupyansk. Russian troops advanced some one kilometer into the southern part of the city, reaching the Yubileyny neighborhood and capturing some high-rise buildings there.
Kiev forces are still fighting in the center of Kupyansk. They are, however, facing serious logistical difficulties. The only road leading to the city from the south and all the crossings on the Oskil River are within the effective range of Russian drone units.
To the southeast of Kupyansk, Ukrainian troops are reportedly conducting a counterattack near Pishchane. The Zapad Group of Forces reached the settlement earlier this month after breaking through the defenses along the nearby railroad. Heavy fighting is now taking place there as Russian troops attempt to repel the counterattack.
In general, the situation in Kharkiv remains in favor of the Russian military. Ukraine is desperately attempting to hold onto its remaining positions in Kupyansk. However, the city will likely be captured by the Zapad Group of Forces within a few weeks, if not days.
Kiev forces are currently at risk of being trapped in a pocket to the east, southeast, and south of Kupyansk behind the Oskil.
