On December 23, the Russian military captured another settlement in Dnepropetrovsk from Kiev forces, and expanded its control further in the city of Huliaipole in Zaporozhye after breaking through another Ukrainian line of defenses.

The capture of Andreyevka, located on the right bank of the Haichur River in Dnepropetrovsk, was officially announced by the Russian Ministry of Defense, which noted that the 36th Guards Motorised Rifle Brigade of the 29th Army, a part of the Vostok [East] Group of Forces], led the attack on the settlement.

“Andreyevka is an important area of enemy defense of more than nine square kilometers. During the combat, about 510 buildings and structures were mopped up,” the ministry said in a statement.

“The liberation of Andreyevka made it possible to expand the staging area for further advance on the west bank of the Gaychur (Haichur) River,” it added.

During the battle in the settlement, Ukraine’s 92nd Assault Brigade lost two platoons of troops and ten pieces of military equipment.

With the capture of Andreyevka, only one settlement, Pysantsi, remained under the control of Kiev forces on the right bank of the Haichur. The Sever has already crossed to the left bank of the river in four different areas, and Ukrainian defenses there are collapsing.

Further south along the Haichur in Zaporozhye, the Sever Group of Forces continues to expand its control inside Huliaipole.

Russian troops made additional gains in both the northern and southern parts of the city. They also broke through another Ukrainian defense line in the center of the city, capturing the museum at 75 Sobornaya Street. The push was facilitated by intense air and artillery strikes, in addition to drone attacks that limited the movement of Kiev forces inside and around the city.

Currently, the Sever Group of Forces is in control of at least 70 precent of Huliaipole. This number is, however, a rough estimate.

All in all, the Russian military is clearly heading towards a victory in Huliaipole and along the Haichur. Kiev forces could lose this entire sector within a few weeks. Recent attempts to reinforce defense lines there have clearly failed, and Ukraine no longer has the resources, especially the manpower, to keep fighting.

A Ukrainian defeat would encourage Russia to push deeper into Zaporozhye, specifically towards Orikhiv, a key logistics and command hub.
