Russian Army Is About To Trap Kiev Forces In Liman (Videos)

On October 20, the Russian military advanced closer to the city of Krasny Liman in the Donetsk direction, threatening to trap Kiev forces behind the Siverskyi Donets River.

To the north of Krasny Liman, the Yug [South] Group of Forces broke through Ukrainian defenses north and west of Novoselivka, reaching the Yarova which was located right along the Siverskyi Donets. Kiev forces are almost besieged in the center and eastern parts of Novoselivka, and Russian troops are reportedly entering Yarova.

The capture of Yarova, which may be a few days away, could mark the start of the collapse of Ukrainian defenses along the river, all the way down to south of Krasny Liman, where the Yug Group of Force has also made gains.

Russian troops advanced to the north and northwest of Yampil, as well as to the west of Tors’ke. They are currently reported to be situated just under 3,5 kilometers away from the southern entrance of Krasny Liman.

Kiev forces are desperately fighting to keep control over Yampil, as the capture of the settlement would allow the Yug Group of Forces to sever the main route linking Krasny Liman with the city of Seversk further to the south in Donetsk. More importantly, Russian troops will be able to attack Ozerne, which is located along Siverskyi Donets.

Such a breakthrough would effectively trap all Kiev forces in Krasny Liman and the areas south and east of it in a large pocket.

Recent reports from Krasny Liman indicate that some Ukrainian troops are already fleeing out of fear of being trapped on the western bank of the River. A notable increase in human losses has been also contributing to this emerging state of panic.

This situation shows how the Seversky Donets, once a natural defensive barrier, now poses a real challenge for Kiev forces.

With most bridges in that part of the river destroyed and remaining crossings limited to fragile, temporary structures, Ukrainian supply routes are severely constrained. Making things worse, these routes are already within the range of Russian fire from the ground and air.

As Russian troops close in, the defense of Krasny Liman appears increasingly untenable. Kiev could shift focus to Sloviansk, its next critical stronghold.
