Kiev forces launched a new drone attack against Crimea and attempted to land saboteurs in the peninsula on September 10.
The Russian Ministry of Defense said in a statement that eight suicide drones were shot down off the Black Sea coast of Crimea in the early morning.
“The Kiev government’s attempt to attack facilities on the territory of the Russian Federation with fixed-wing drones was thwarted,” the ministry said. “Missile defense units on duty destroyed eight unmanned aerial vehicles above the Black Sea waters, off the coast of the Republic of Crimea.”
In a separate statement, the ministry said that the aviation of the Russian Navy destroyed three high-speed boats which were carrying Ukrainian saboteurs in the Black Sea.
“This morning, planes of the Black Sea fleet’s naval aviation destroyed three Willard Sea Force high-speed US-made military boats with a landing party of the Ukrainian armed forces in the western part of the Black Sea, northeast of the Zmeiny Island. The boats were headed towards the Crimean coast,” the ministry said.
Kiev forces stepped up attacks on the Crimean Peninsula in recent weeks in what appears to be an attempt to distract the Russian military.
The last attack attempts were apparently met with a swift response. Air raid warning went on in northeastern and central Ukraine early on September 10. Loud explosions were later reported in the capital, Kiev, as well as in Poltava, Sumy and Chernigov.
Kiev forces said that the capital was attacked with 33 Russian Geran-1 and 2 suicide drones. 26 of the drones were allegedly intercepted by Ukrainian air defenses.
The attempts to attack Crimea came following the end of week thirteen of Ukraine’s so-called spring counteroffensive. Kiev forces sustained heavy losses and failed to break through Russian defenses in any direction during the week. As weather conditions begin to worsen, the counteroffensive appears to be heading towards complete failure.
