A Panstir-S1 system at Russia’s Khmeimim Air Base in Syria
On August 10, Russian forces shot down three armed unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) that approached Hmeimim airbase in the western Syrian governorate of Lattakia, according to the media center of the Syrian National Defense Forces (NDF). The UAVs were reportedly on their way to bomb the airbase.
This was the second attempt to target the Hmeimim airbase with armed UAVs in the last 48 hours. A day earlier, the Russian Centre for the Reconciliation of Opposing Sides in Syria announced that Russian forces shot down a UAV over the airbase.
In response to the previous attack attempt, the Syrian Arab Air Force (SyAAF) and the Russian Aerospace Forces conducted more than 100 airstrikes on several positions, headquarters and ammo depots of militants in the northern governorate of Idlib.
The response for the new attack will likely be bigger and may even include a ground operation led by the Syrian Arab Army (SAA). Earlier today a large convoy of the Tiger Forces arrived in the northern Hama countryside, which confirms that Russia and the Damascus government are seriously considering such option.
Eradicate terrorist presence in Idlib, and Russian surface to air defenses are the best.
