The Russian military celebrate the two-month anniversary of Kiev’s counter offensive with new victories on the Ukrainian frontlines. On August 5, the Russian Ministry of Defence reported that Russian forces had taken control of the village of Novoselovskoe in the Luhansk People’s Republic.
According to the Russian Defense Ministry, during the offensive on a wide front, Russian forces “improved the situation” along the front edge in the Kharkiv region, in the areas of the settlements of Olshana and Pershotravnevoye. Over the past day, the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) lost up to 140 servicemen in the Kupyansk region. Two armored fighting vehicles, three cars, a Polish-made Krab self-propelled artillery system, as well as D-20 and Msta-B howitzers were destroyed.
The day before, the Russian Defense Ministry reported that the Russian military repelled four attacks by units of the 14th mechanized and 25th Airborne brigades of the AFU in the area of Novoselovskoe.
The battle for the village has been ongoing for several months. The AFU held the defense on two streets in the west of the ruined village. Ukrainian forces were repelled from the settlement, but they are still in control of a dominant height located to the south of Novoselovskoe. Fighting is ongoing in the area.
Novoselovskoye is located on the Kupyansk-Svatovo highway and secures Russian control of the Kuzemovka railway station. The AFU planned to advance along this road deep in the Luhansk People’s Republic last year, after Russian withdrawal from the Kharkiv region. Today, Russian units are regularly reclaiming victories in the area. While Kiev has concentrated its main forces on the Zaporozhye frontlines for Kiev’s counteroffensive, the Russian military launched counterattacks in different directions on northern Donbass frontlines. As a result, the Ukrainian military is distracted and is forced to transfer additional forces to different frontlines.
