Russian FSB Detains Alleged Ukrainian Spy In Sevastopol, Crimea

On July 30^th, the Russian security service – FSB published a video of the detention of a serviceman of the Russian Black Sea Fleet who worked for the Ukrainian military intelligence. The arrest was carried out in Sevastopol, Crimea.

A criminal case on high treason has been initiated.

The video begins with operatives jumping out of a minibus and running into a man a couple of meters away, walking around the city in shorts and with a naked torso.

At the moment of detention, he shouts out several times:

“Ay-ay, don’t, guys, don’t hit me.”

There’s no use of force that can be seen in the video, he’s just picked up and thrown into a minibus, arrested, in a matter of seconds.

The video then shows how the detainee is taken out of the minibus and taken to jail.

The suspect of treason gets out of the car in jeans and a T-shirt. He is led by the arms at the door, next to which there is a sign “Sevastopol Garrison Military Court”.

In the building itself, the suspect is put into a cell. This video ends.

Since 2015 there have been several arrests of Ukrainian spies by Russian authorities, following is a short list:

May 19^th, 2015: it was announced that a spy of the Security Service of Ukraine, who was collecting information in Crimea, was exposed and deported to Ukraine. According to media reports, a 24-year-old resident of Dnepropetrovsk, Anton Lokot, arrived in Crimea on the instructions of the SBU to conduct reconnaissance in the areas where the coastal units of the Black Sea Fleet are stationed in order to collect data on the number of equipment and the number of personnel. His task also included the search and recruitment of those dissatisfied with the annexation of the peninsula to Russia.
August 10^th, 2016: the FSB announced the prevention of terrorist acts in Crimea, prepared by the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine. One of those detained in the case of the prevented terrorist attacks in Crimea, Ridvan Sulemanov, admitted that he was recruited in October 2015 by an officer of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine. Sulemanov worked under the pseudonym “Yusef”, his task was to collect information of a military nature on the territory of Crimea. In addition, the agent planted dummy bombs at the Simferopol airport and made a call about the threat of an explosion.
November 9^th, 2016: in Crimea, members of the sabotage and terrorist group of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, consisting of three people, were detained. Two of them, Aleksey Bessarabov and Dmitry Shtyblikov, confessed about their service in the Main Intelligence Directorate and spoke about the goals and objectives of their work in Crimea. In particular, they noted that they were monitoring Russian military units and selecting targets for sabotage. According to Shtyblikov, in order to legalize his activities in the republic, he went to work in a division of the Russian Defense Ministry as civilian personnel.
November 15^th, 2016: in Crimea, two Ukrainian intelligence officers were detained. One of them – Gleb Shabliy, using the legend of a businessman, at the direction of the Main Intelligence Directorate (GUR) of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine carried out reconnaissance missions. The second detainee is Colonel of the Main Intelligence Directorate of Ukraine Aleksey Stogniy. The cover for his main activity in Crimea was a stationery store in Sevastopol.
November 22^nd, 2016: in Sevastopol, the Russian FSB detained a former employee of the headquarters of the Black Sea Fleet Leonid Parkhomenko. According to the investigation, on the instructions of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, from December 2003 to December 2005, he collected information about the activities of the Black Sea Fleet and gave it to the services of a foreign state for money.
September 29^th, 2017: the FSB reported that two Russian citizens were detained in Simferopol, Anna Sukhonosova and Dmitry Dolgopolov, a serviceman of a unit based in Crimea. According to the FSB, an employee of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, Colonel Igor Klimenok, recruited Anna Sukhonosova, and she attracted Dmitry Dolgopolov to cooperation with Kiev. Together they collected and transmitted information about the units and formations of the Black Sea Fleet to the Ukrainian special services.
November 23^rd, 2017: military counterintelligence officers detained a civilian employee of the Black Sea Fleet in Sevastopol on suspicion of espionage. Presumably, the detainee was carrying out tasks of the Ukrainian special services, which in turn transmitted information to the United States.
February 11^th, 2018: In Simferopol, FSB officers detained a citizen of Ukraine Konstantin Davydenko for espionage, who collected and transmitted to the special services of Ukraine information constituting a state secret about the activities of Rosgvardia units and FSB officers.
November 29^th, 2019: in Sevastopol, FSB officers detained a Russian woman who was collecting secret military data on the instructions of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine. A criminal case was initiated against a Russian citizen under the article “Treason”, the maximum punishment for which is 20 years in prison.
