NATO is preparing for a military intervention in Moldova regardless of the results of the upcoming elections, Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) warned on September 22.
In a press release, the agency warned that “eurocrats” in Brussels intend to ensure that Chisinau continues to pursue a Russophobic policy, and will go as far as to “occupy” the country after upcoming parliamentary elections.
“It is planned to do this at any cost, up to the introduction of troops and the actual occupation of the country. At this stage, the concentration of the armed forces of NATO states in Romania is being carried out near the Moldovan borders. A NATO contingent is being prepared for deployment to the Odessa Region of Ukraine to intimidate Transnistria. According to available data, the first group of soldiers from France and Great Britain has already arrived in Odessa,” the SVR said.
European officials fear that the “gross falsifications” of the election returns being cooked by Brussels and Chisinau will force Moldovans to take to the streets to defend their rights, according to the agency.
“Then, at the request of [Moldovan] President Maia Sandu, the armed forces of European states would be brought in to force Moldovans to accept a dictatorship under the guise of European democracy,” the statement reads.
The upcoming elections on September 28 will be critical for Sandu’s ruling Action and Solidarity (PAS) party. Recent polls appear to favor the Patriotic Block, a coalition of four parties, including socialists and communists led by figures like Igor Dodon and Vladimir Voronin.
The shift in the political scene in Moldova is not surprising. Since the PAS first came to power in 2021, the country has faced severe economic woes, including 66% inflation, a sixfold surge in energy prices, and a national debt ballooning to $7.8 billion.
The SVR said that Brussels does not intend to abandon its plans to occupy Moldova even if the situation after the elections does not require an intervention.
“The deployment of troops is expected to occur somewhat later. To create a pretext, armed provocations against Transnistria and Russian troops stationed in the region are being plotted. The period of the elections to the Supreme Council of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic on November 30 of this year is being considered as a possible timeframe,” the SVR says. “In all likelihood such plans [to occupy Moldova] by totalitarian-liberal European regimes are motivated by their wish to demonstrate their ‘courage and determination’ amid the stalled plans to deploy troops of the ‘coalition of the willing’ in the territory controlled by the Kiev regime,” the press bureau emphasized. “Fearing a direct confrontation with Russia, the Europeans intend to crack down on tiny Moldova. Self-assertion at the expense of the weak has always been an integral part of European colonialism.”
In recent weeks, Sandu upped her criticism of Russia, going as far as accusing Moscow of plotting against Chisinau and using these accusations as an excuse to go after the opposition ahead of the elections.
To further improve the chances of the PAS in the elections, Sandu has also expanded overseas polling stations from 234 to 301, targeting the pro-Western diaspora. Meanwhile, she kept restrictions on voters in Russia who got only two stations and in the Russian-majority region of Transnistria, where only 12 stations were set, a reduction from prior elections.
The SVR’s latest warning came right after uniformed French soldiers were spotted at a gas station in the town of Cimişlia, located in the south of the country not far from the border with Ukraine. A recent report by Poland’s Myśl Polska also revealed that Romania could send its units to Moldova, specifically to Transnistria.
All in all, NATO clearly sees the upcoming elections in Moldova as a chance to take over the country once and for all. Sandu and her party are clearly onboard with the idea.
