Su-30SM fighter jets of the Russian Naval Aviation have been upgraded to carry the advanced R-37M long-range air-to-air missile.
The upgrade was revealed by video footage released by the Russian Ministry of Defense on May 22. The footage shows a Su-30SM carrying at least two R-37M missiles, one on the front hardpoint under the fuselage and another on the first hardpoint of its left wing, while taking off from the Crimean Peninsula on a patrol over the Black Sea.
The Su-30SM was designed by the JSC Sukhoi Company to gain air supremacy and to target adversaries on the ground using a wide range of weapons including air-to-air, air-to-surface and guided and unguided bombs with a total weapons load of up to 8,000 kg.
The fighter jet is equipped with the N011M Bars radar with a maximum detection range 400 kilometers and a search range 200 kilometers. The radar capabilities are enough to successfully guide the R-37M.
The air-to-air missile was developed by Russia’s JSC Tactical Missiles Corporation to engage all types of aerial targets day and night and under all conditions, including hostile electronic countermeasures, from a very long range. Its range exceeds 200 kilometers, and it is capable of hypersonic speed, more than Mach 5, in the final stage of its flight.
The R-37M utilizes a complex guidance system. An inertial navigation system, built on high-precision laser gyroscopes, guides the missile for most of the flight path to the target. If the target suddenly changes course, the missile trajectory can be corrected from the launching fighter jet via a secured data link. The active homing radar 9B-1103M-350, which was developed by JSC Research Institute, is activated in close proximity to the target causing its warhead to explode and to avoid detection until too late.
Previously, only modernized MiG-31BM interceptor jets, Su-35S multirole fighter jets, and Su-57 stealth fighter jets of the Russian Aerospace Forces could be armed with the R-37M. Now, the upgraded Su-30SM has brought the missile’s advanced capabilities to the Russian Navy.
Several fighter jets of the Ukrainian Air Force have been shot down using R-37M missiles since the start of the Russian special military operation in Ukraine. Last week, a missile of this type hit a Ukrainian Su-27, killing its pilot who was a prominent officer.
