A Russian Su-34 fighter-bomber was shot down by Ukrainian forces in the area of Alchevsk in the Luhansk People’s Republic. The incident took place last night.
The city of Alchevsk, as well as the entire territory of the Luhansk People’s Republic, is under control of Russian-led forces. According to Russian military reporters, the warcraft was flying over the area at the moment when Ukrainian forces opened fire with MLRS HIMARS supplied by the U.S.. The aircraft was reportedly intercepted by Russian air defence systems aimed at intercepting Ukrainian missiles.
The same sources reported that the crew successfully ejected and was evacuated from the area.
Russian or LPR military officials are yet to comment on the accident.
Last night, the air defense forces destroyed a target in the sky over Alchevsk. The target was not immediately identified.
The target was likely the Russian Su-34.

On July 18, the Russian Ministry of Defense published video showing the work of Su-34 fighter-bomber crews in Eastern Ukraine. Russian aircraft are involved in the destruction of military infrastructure of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. They perform combat missions aimed at detection and destruction of enemy ground targets, using a wide range of missile and bomb weapons. They may also defeat enemy air targets. Russian pilots carry out military sorties both during daylight and at night, in all weather conditions.
Russian Su-34 fighter bombers have earlier begun to use an advanced electronic warfare (EW) system to jam Ukraine’s remaining air defenses. Some of the fighters was spotted carrying the advanced EW system, the SAP-14, to provide protection for the formation. However, this did not protect Russian aircraft from Russian air defence systems.
What’s the difference. The Russian air force has been horribly underperforming anyway. Hypothetical speaking the Israeli air force could take out the entire Russian air force in a matter of days, just look at how the Israelis keep running circles around Russian air defenses in Syria.

With their fleet drones, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles, their old F-4 phantoms, Migs, and Su’s could inflict very bad carnage on the Israeli military infrastructure. The Iranians need to work out a few areas they’re still weak at and expand their air force. They have some semi-decent and interesting indigenous designs, but I still think it would be more economical and better to go for quantity over quality and expand their fleet and number of pilots with cold war era refurbs, such as Mig-23/27, Su-22. Single engine jets as this can still limp home if they have ramjet assist via such tubes mounted on some of their pylons.

Cruise speed on the craft is around 650-700 km/h . So limp home requirements would accommodate far higher mass aircraft.
Such incidents only happens with the Russian military. Like shooting down own aircrafts, and getting shot down by ATGMS (not SAMs). It’s hilarious. Also, I have no idea why the himmars are still performing, and not destroyed. Are they so hard to destroy? Apparently not. What the RU army is doing with all those jets, missiles and satellites? First … how do you know “jets barely fly over Ukraine”? Justin Bronk, an analyist with the British defence think tank RUSI said he hasn’t got a clue as to how the Russian air war is going because NATO surveillance aircraft can’t get close enough to the battlefield to see anything on radar. So do you have your own radar or are you just relying on Ukraine propaganda?
Second “intensity” has nothing to do with it. US patriot missiles shot down a British Tornado and and F-18 in Iraq at a time when they had air supremacy … the excuse was a malfunction in the patriots IFF software. That has NOTHING to do with sortie rates or the number of targets in the sky.

Shows once more the core weakness of the russian military. The lack of integration into a unified system of communications and reconnesence. Thats the one strength of the west cause they have decades of war experiance and know how to comunicate. Russia has multiple forces in ukraine who do not communicate enough with each other.

Why is it so difficult to simply say it was either a Ukrainian or a Russian flagged aircraft? Saying a Russian plane is shot down by Russian a-a fire shows very loose editing.
At least now the Russian forces know where the HIMARS launching took place. Now it’s time to destroy it.
Su-34 shouldn’t fly over the front lines. It should make deep interdiction missions using stand off ammo only or supporting troops with stand off ammo only!!!

There was a time this happened before when an Israeli jet purposefully cast his Shadow from a Syrian SAM radar onto a Russian sigint or transport aircraft (can’t quite remember but it was a turboprop larger aircraft I think). One or some of the Syrian SAM missiles downed that Russian aircraft. So it’s possible IFF isn’t available (or not enabled) for these interceptor munitions.
S-200 old system it wasn’t linked with Russian network. NO IFF. F-16 has RCS large similar to IL-22 so old 1960s era radar of S-200 illuminated the IL-22 instead of the nearby F-16 coward kike plane.
IFF is a small computer that has been known to glitch from time to time resulting in accidents. Same thing happened to the Patriot missiles during the Iraq war as well resulting in an f-18 being shot down.
Wrong place at the wrong time. It happens.
How can one mitigate any more risks of this?
Better and faster (almost instantaneous) communications maybe? The Sukhoi should also have tried evasive maneuver and countermeasures; but I guess they had no idea of the risk of friendly fire in this weird situation.

Bad timing with the ukrop surface-surface launch. It’s too bad these SAMs didn’t seem to have an IFF system to prevent this. On the bright side, the pilots are okay, and these sort of events have been extremely rare.
New Su34 can come out of a factory, new pilots can’t. Luckily they surivived the incident and may soon be back in the seats of a new aircraft.

SU-34 have IFF transponders like all RUAF planes. Also most BUK/S-300 which are stationed in LNR have IFF on radar. This is embarrassing. Major failure on radar operator’s part for failing to identify the IFF signal or failure on SU-34 pilots part by not TURNING ON IFF transponder for fuck sakes. Thankfully pilots survived hopefully.

Headline has it that Russian aircraft shot down by Russian/LPR ( friendly fire). Beginning of the article say it was Ukraine aircraft shot down by Russians/LPR.
Which is it?
The anniversary of TWA 800 was yesterday. The plane was most likely shot down by accident during a naval drill. It killed 230 civilians. So friendly fire happens. Even among know it all Americans.
Nice shiny new Su-34M will soon replace it… And the collective West shall pay for it!
