On April 13th, the first batch of modernized T-90M Proryv-3 main battle tank was delivered to the Russian Armed Forces.
“The first deliveries of the modernized T-90M Proryv-3 main battle tanks to the Guards Tank Army of the Western Military District, deployed in 5 regions of Russia, began in April of this year,” said Army Commander Lieutenant General Sergey Kisel.
According to him, several tanks entered the Taman motorized rifle division, which is part of the army.
Command, fire, and combat training on new tanks have been completed, in the 1st Guards Tank Army of the Western Military District.
“In the tank army, several dozen types of simulators are used: for training crews of the T-80, T-72B3, T-90 tanks,” the commander noted.
The T-90M Proryv-3 main battle tank received a more powerful engine and a fundamentally new turret that differs from the serial one.
The main battle tank is equipped with a new multi-channel sight, providing the use of weapons at any time of the day. Together with the Kalina automated fire control system and an improved fire extinguishing system, this increases the combat capabilities and survivability of the tank.
The upgraded tank can exchange data with other vehicles in real time – this is one of its main features. The T-90M armor is equipped with a special coating that protects against slipping. The same is used on the latest T-14 Armata battle tank.
Manufactured by Uralvagonzavod (UVZ), the key difference between the new modernized main battle tank and its predecessor is the new Relikt tower module with dynamic protection.
The final tests of the T-90M Proryv-3 main battle tank were successfully carried out in February 2020.
The Ministry of Defense signed an agreement on the supply of T-90M with Uralvagonzavod at the Army-2017 forum.
After that, in November 2019, Major General Sergey Bibik, the head of the main armored directorate of the Ministry of Defense, said that the T-90M Proryv-3 main battle tanks would enter the armed forces in 2020.
The T-90M is armed with a new 2A46M-4 gun, which has longer range and is 15-20% more accurate than the standard gun of 2A46M gun of the T-90. It uses the same 125 mm ammunition as other Russian main battle tanks. It fires APFSDS, HE and HE-FRAG rounds. The tank can also launch 9M119 Refleks (Western reporting name AT-11 or Sniper-B) anti-tank guided missiles in the same manner as ordinary munitions. These missiles have a range of 4-5 km and can also engage low-flying helicopters. A total of 43 rounds, including missiles, are carried for the main gun.
The T-90M uses a proven carousel-type autoloader. A total of 22 rounds are stored in the autoloader and are ready to use.
Secondary armament consists of a coaxial 7.62 mm machine gun. There is a also a roof-mounted remotely-controlled weapon station, armed with a 12.7 mm heavy machine gun. Both machine guns are operated under armor.
