The Russian newspaper Vzglyad furnished opinion over a possible US-Russian confrontation in Syria referring to the officials allegedly affiliated to the Russian Ministry of Defense.
The official is sure that it is Russian opportunity to “show everything it possess and is able to do”.
The officials stated that the general scenario is clear:
“The two destroyers in the eastern Mediterranean will launch the first set of cruise missile and then the USA will launch their “smart” missiles”.
“The aim is clear: the defensive side must disburse its ammunition allowance of missiles. Afterwards, the US considers to “fire with impunity” from the other warships headed with the air carrier “Truman”.
“It is absolutely transparent, that the strike will be. We have time to prepare the defeat and to reorganize our work under the circumstances”, concluded the official.
According to the article, it is important to know what time will it take the adversary to contract. As the source estimates, Russia “has imposed enough of different facilities of the air defense”. Thus, cruise missiles are not the problem for this modern Protection Against Aircraft (PAA).
However, the official emphasized the US immensity, which Russia has to stand against.
“If we take in that the strike will be more powerful than it was at the Shayrat Airbase (60 missiles were launched), so it will be about 100 missiles”, supposed the expert of the Strategy analysis and Technology Center Vasiliy Kashin.
“Besides the US could block Syrian ports to nip military deliveries”, he added.
The referred officials remarked that the “upcoming” US strike on Syria will be a decisive exam for the Russian forces.
The newspaper’s sources believe that Russian remains strong and sure about its military capabilities regardless and is ready to take counter measrues to possible US military actions.

Iraq have already given the Russians permission to overfly their airspace with missiles and aircraft, so I doubt that the US will be able to gather the aircraft and munitions safely in Iraq.

It’s not as radical as you think, they can see where the missles are headed shortly after launch and if they are headed close to Russian forces it’s actually the clear option because it stops salvo from being launched. It’s going to greatly depend in the scale of the attack. If it’s a farce like the last attack then it won’t be broad enough to endanger Russian forces but also won’t do much damage to syria. If it broad enough to be meaningful then Russian forces will be endangered and hitting the ships is a better option than trying to shoot down the missles after launch . If they have the stated intention of doing damage and actually commit to it, it’s the clear option to hit the ships .
I would say, first shoot down the missiles but if they keep them coming, then may be target the ships. It is very a tricky and a dangerous situation and the commanders on the ground don’t have the luxury and time to think these things through.

Thing is that it is impossible for any party (be it Russia or US) to stop all missiles if enough are lounched. At one point AD is saturated. One must disrupt incoming salvos. I would also prefer that US shoots and all the missiles get intersepted – no one is seriously hurt and bully knows he’s gun is not working. That would buy more time (till bully comes up with new or more guns). It is not possible unfortunately. Things may escalate out of politicians control into strict military procedures control very rapidly and “experienced” US commander in chief may not even realise that very soon he becomes a “passenger” merely witnessing “what the f$ck have I done” But. In this case I say that if there’s meaningful attack from US side (not some forgotten shithole in the middle of nowhere) than we have to respond with real force. Let them have it. We’re ready.

Thanks…. From the beginning, I’ve observed the Russian leadership fail to understand the language of the bully and trying to discuss with them the issues in a rational and respectful manner. The only result from such efforts has been for the bully to intensify it’s provocations and actions. This is my position. I fear though this is going to be a repeat of the last US missile strike. I am not even sure Russia will make any attempt to intercept the missiles. I hope I am wrong though. I share your concern. Listening to the Russian UK ambassador this morning, he was asked a very direct question regarding whether or not Russia would shoot down UK or US aircraft if they attacked Syria. He was non-committal and diplomatic. We’ll have to wait and see what happens when the missing-link-knuckle-dragging-psychopaths launch. And yes, if Russia allows them to strike and destroy or retard, the process of ridding the Syrian people of the head-choppers supported by the Empire, they may as well not have intervened at all, for it will surely get worse. For that very reason, I believe Russia will fight back, but it’s still all speculation.
I still can only think about Putins track record. So far he refuses to do anything, every time there is a new provocation, which is really every day of the week. I do not have military experience, but only common sense. In my opinion priority is to protect air defense systems only, and allow other missiles to pass through. Even if US has 1000+ missiles, it is important to keep air defense systems operational in long-term and be able to repel enemy airplanes at any time. Missiles will do some damage elsewhere, but without air defense systems, it is game over. Once cruise missiles are used, they will use airplanes – and this is where “fun” starts. Also, in case Americans start to use cruise missiles, it is important to sink ships/subs ASAP, as it will limit total amount of missiles shot.

A lot of commentators and analysts are wrong just about everything in this case. Russia/Putin has shown a lot of determination and at the same time restraint in dealing with US and Israel over Syria. It is typical of Russia (dating back to the tsarists period) to appear weak before any conflict and hence the reason they have always been underestimated by their opponents… Remember both Hitler and Napoleon comments before they attacked/invaded Russia?
That said, what many analysts are interested in is just sheer numbers. Having many warships, frigates, subs, aircraft carriers, navy destroyers etc. does not mean a damn thing to someone who possesses anti ship missiles. Russia does not need to have the same amount of naval assets of the combined numbers of US, UK and France. Russia has plenty anti ship missiles capable of destroying all and every naval asset of the allied powers, and that my friend is what matters. In this war all that counts is ANTI SHIP MISSILES and INTEGRATED AIR DEFENCE, which you do agree that Russia is the best in the world in this regard. Currently, Russia has got enough batteries for their S300 and S400 SAMS and they have also layered-up their INTEGRATED AIR DEFENCE systems with multiple jamming sensors thereby building an effective A2-AD (Anti-Access Area Denial) in Syria, which is something that NATO worries extremely about.
