A number of people were reportedly killed or injured by security forces fire during protests against law enforcement brutality in the southern Nigerian city of Lagos.
Nigerians have been protesting against the brutality of a now-disbanded police unit, the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARAS), for two weeks now. The protesters #EndSars social media hashtag has amassed worldwide support for the demonstrations.
The protests went deadly on October 21. Soldiers opened fire at the protesters, according to Amnesty International. The human rights group claims that several protesters were killed or injured.
Videos shared on social media show uniformed officers opening fire at a number of protesters in the streets of Lagos, Nigeria’s biggest city.
Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Lagos Governor, said a single person was killed and at least 25 others were injured during the protests in the city.
The situation in Lagos will likely escalate further in the upcoming few days and weeks. Nigeria, which is facing a serious terrorism threat in the northeast, may be heading to a political show down.
