Seven Turkish-Backed Fighters Assassinated In Northern Syria In Last 48 Hours

Illustrative image

On August 8, unknown gunmen killed four fighters of the Turkish-backed Euphrates Shield (ES) force and injured two others west of the city of Manbij in the northern Aleppo countryside, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR).

The UK-based monitoring group said that fighters of the ES believe that the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) was behind the attack. However, sources in the SDF denied these claims.

A day earlier, a commander of the 51 Brigade, which is a part of Turkish-backed forces in northern Syria, was assassinated in the area of Afrin. Furthermore, unknown gunmen shot and killed two fighters of the Turkish-backed Ahrar al-Sharqiyah in the ES areas in the northeastern Aleppo countryside.

While opposition activists accuse the SDF of carrying out these attacks, other Kurdish forces such as the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) may be behind these assassinations. Despite that theses groups represent a large part of the SDF, they divide their operations against Turkey from the SDF’s operations.

Assassination is something that happens to politicians in peace time. Soldiers in a war zone are casualties.
