Several American fighter jets crashed in Kuwait on March 2, right after an Iranian attack targeted the United States embassy in the country.
One of the fighter jets, an F-15E Strike Eagle fighter jet of the U.S. Air Force, reportedly crashed some ten kilometers away from Ali Al Salem Air Base, which hosts U.S. forces. The base is located in central Kuwait, roughly 15 kilometers west of the city of Al Jahra and approximately 37 kilometers from the Iraqi border.
The F-15E is a twin-engine, two-seat, all-weather multirole strike fighter derived from the F-15 Eagle, developed for long-range precision ground attacks while retaining strong air-to-air capability, with a top speed over Mach 2.5 and a large weapons payload.
Videos show both pilots ejecting as the F-15E went down in flames. Meanwhile, photos from the ground appeared to show three pilots captured by locals who handed them over to Kuwaiti security forces. This indicates that at least two fighter jets crashed.

The U.S. Central Command has not released any statement yet, but the Kuwait Army confirmed that “several U.S. military aircraft” crashed in the country.
“Relevant authorities immediately initiated search and rescue procedures, evacuating the crews and transferring them to the hospital to check on their health and provide the necessary medical care, noting that their condition is stable,” the Kuwait Army General Staff Head Quarters said in a statement, adding that an investigation was launched.
While it is possible that the fighter jets were shot down by medium-range anti-aircraft missiles launched by Iran-aligned factions in Iraq, or by some cell near Ali Al Salem Air Base using a man-portable air defense system — Shia Muslims make a large part of Kuwait population —, the most likely scenario is that they were hit by American or Kuwaiti air defenses in a friendly-fire incident. It is also possible that there was some collision midair.
The fighter jets went down around the same time smoke was seen rising from the American embassy in the capital Kuwait City amid an attack by Iran.

Sirens sounded over the city following a volley of Iranian attacks, which started across the oil-rich Gulf region in the early morning. The embassy didn’t announce it had been hit, but issued a security alert urging people to stay away.
“There is a continuing threat of missile and UAV attacks over Kuwait. Do not come to the embassy,” the statement says.
From its side, the Ministry of Interior of Kuwait said that an unspecified number of drones were intercepted over the country. It is very likely that the American fighter jets were mistaken for Iranian drones.
The American-Israeli attack on Iran has sparked a regional conflict, and the Islamic Republic has escalated its attacks over the past day in response to the assassination of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
