Early on September 3, around two dozen suicide drones attacked Odessa Port in southern Ukraine, causing heavy material losses.
Kiev said that the attack was launched by the Russian military using Geran-1 and 2 suicide drones. However, the Russian Ministry of Defense is yet to confirm or deny this.
The Ukrainian Air Force claimed that 22 out of 25 drones that targeted the port were shot down by air defense systems. However, head of the regional military administration Oleg Kiper acknowledged on his Telegram channel that the port was damaged.
“There was a hit in the port infrastructure,” he said.
In addition, videos and photos that surfaced on social media showed heavy damage at the port. What appears to be a fuel storage facility was destroyed along with several tankers.
The drone attack may have been carried out by the Russian military in response to recent Ukrainian attack attempts on the Crimean Peninsula and several regions in central Russia.

The attack on Odessa Port came amid reports of more Ukrainian losses in several directions across the frontline within the special military operation zone.
The Russian Zapad Group of Forces announced on September 3 that its Su-34 fighter bombers had carried out two airstrikes against a gathering of Ukraine’s 68th Separate Jaeger Brigade close to Kopanki and Cherneshchina in the Kupyansk direction.
In addition, the group’s artillery destroyed an American-made M777 towed howitzer, an American-made M109 self-propelled howitzer and three mortars near Sverdlovka and Revucheye. Two Polish-made Krab self-propelled howitzers were also destroyed Lancet loitering munitions near Petropavlovka and Zapadnoye.
Moreover, two Sinitsa and Columba drones were shot down by the group’s air defenses near Sofievka and Pilipovka. A Buk medium-range air defense system also intercepted HIMARS precision-guided rockets over Novokrasnyanka.
Meanwhile, the Russian Yug Group of Forces announced that it had launched missile strikes against gatherings of Ukraine’s 4th Separate Assault Brigade. As a result of the strikes, four Polish-made Krab self-propelled howitzers were destroyed near Raiskoye and Dolgaya Balka.
The group also targeted five ammunition depots for S-200 anti-aircraft missiles in Slavyansk, a temporary deployment point in Karlovka as well as gatherings of manpower and equipment in Lisichansky, Soledaro-Artemovsky, Aleksandro-Kalinovsky, Avdeevsky and Maryinsky directions.
Moreover, an American-made M119 towed howitzer and an MSTA-B towed howitzer were targeted by the group’s artillery near Belaya Gora. A D-20 towed howitzer in Ivanodaryevka as well as three 120 mm mortars near Stepnoe, Vesyoloye and Pervomaiskoye were also destroyed.
In addition, the group’s TOS-1A heavy multiple rocket launchers targeted gatherings close to Andreevka, Kleshcheevka and Razdolovka.
Meanwhile in the direction of Bakhmut, Russian paratroopers prevented several Ukrainian sabotage and reconnaissance groups from advancing, according to the Russian MoD.
“The airborne units continue to confidently hold the defense and prevent sabotage and reconnaissance groups from entering the settlements adjacent to Artyomovsk. Every day, scouts advance in small groups to the outskirts of the city to monitor the enemy, who is on the defensive in close proximity to our positions,” the ministry said in a statement.
From its side, the Russian Dnepr Group of Forces announced that it had targeted and destroyed a drone command center of Kiev forces in the Kherson direction.
“Fire damage was inflicted at the place of storage of weapons and armored combat vehicles and the control point of unmanned aerial vehicles of the Ukrainian armed forces,” a spokesman for the group, Roman Kodryan, told TASS.
The spokesman added that an American-made M777 towed howitzer was destroyed by the group in the outskirts of Ingulets.
The group’s forces carried out over 50 fire attacks against Ukrainian positions in Kherson over the past day, according to him.
“Mortar crews and D-30 artillery pieces were destroyed in the area of the settlements of Goncharnaya, Burgunka, Verovka and Otradokamenka,” Kodryan added.
In addition, Russian news sources shared video showing 12 recent strikes with FPV suicide drones against Ukrainain troops and equiptment in several directions.
Week twelve of the Ukrainian counteroffensive is nearing its end. Despite sustaining heavy losses in manpower and equipment, Kiev forces have not yet made any meaningful gains in any direction. All the defensive lines of the Russian military are still holding.
