On August 1, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) entered the towns of Bariqa, Ufaniyah, Turnejeh, Jubata al-Khashab and Beer Ajam along the separation line with the occupied Golan Heights. Thus, the entire southern governorate of al-Quneitra is now under the control of the Damascus government.

Earlier, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported that the last batch of militants in Ufaniyah, Turnejeh and Jubata al-Khashab withdrew towards the opposition-held areas in northern Syria. The UK-based monitoring group added that the former fighters of the Free Syrian Army (FSA) in Bariqa and Beer Ajam opted to stay and reconcile with the Damascus government.

The remaining militants in al-Quneitra accepted an evacuation agreement on July 27. The agreement forced the militants to hand over their weapons to the SAA and allowed them to withdraw or to reconcile with the government.

Now for the first time since 2012, the entire separation line with the Golan Heights is under the control of the SAA. In the upcoming weeks, the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) will likely resume its work in the demilitarized zone there.
