On December 13, ISIS fighters launched a surprise attack on the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) from their positions in in the Yarmouk refugee camp south of the Syrian capital, Damascus, according to the ISIS-linked news agency Amaq.
The media outlet claimed that ISIS fighters captured several positions of the SAA north of the camp and killed dozens of SAA soldiers during the attack.
However, the Hezbollah media wing in Syria said that the SAA repelled ISIS attack and recaptured all lost positions north of the Yarmouk camp hours only after the attack had started. According to pro-government sources, only one SAA soldier was killed by ISIS.
Pro-government activists believe that ISIS attack south of Damascus is an attempt to distract the SAA from its final battle against the terrorist organization in eastern Syria. Especially that the attack south of Damascus was timed with another wide-scale attack of ISIS on the western bank of the Euphrates River in the southeastern Deir Ezzor countryside.
After eliminating ISIS in eastern Syria, the SAA and the Palestinian Liberation Army (PLA) will likely launch a military operation to liberate the Yarmouk camp from terrorists.
In the second to last photo, what the hell is that aluminum thing?
A water tank, i.m.o.
Did they run out of T-72?
Eeeeyyyyyyyyyyy!!
Lol nice joke
Its Solomon Krupachek’s hat I think.
It is GCHQ Syria Ltd, the start of the “War of the Worlds” or a water tank as the Italian says below….. your choice.
PS Well spotted, I missed that as I skimmed down.
What happen in Yarmouk and Western rural Deir-ez-zour shows SAA bad job in defending something they ordered to defend, weak in defense mix with ceasing advances against remain ISIS turf show how Syrian high command execute bad decision again and again. No wonder 3/4 Syrian infested with terrorist. SAA and allies only keep back and forth fighting with terrorist. Seems their field commander unreliable.
What it shows is that the SAA must make strategic decisions about how fast to move without getting too thin in defense. Some think they are moving too slow but they would be slower if they posted manpower at every point that ISIS might attack. ISIS, as article notes, times an attack in one location to distract from an attack elsewhere. They are strategic as well. But for outside observers, who are we to judge?
