Syrian and Russian forces had held joint naval drills at the naval facility in Tartus, the Syrian Ministry of Defense announced on April 23.
In a statement, the ministry said that the drills were attended by General Abdul Karim Mahmoud Ibrahim, Chief of the General Staff of the Army and Armed Forces, and General Sergey Kisel, Commander of the Russian forces operating in Syria.
The drills simulated real combat conditions in defending against potential threats such as terrorist attacks or infiltration by sea or land, it added.
“The exercise included shooting and air landings by the participating units behind the supposed terrorist groups, in addition to firings by Syrian and Russian air defense units at hostile targets,” the ministry said. “Groups of quad [missile] boats, minesweeping boats, frogmen, support and evacuation groups, in addition to units of friendly Russian forces also participated.”
At the end of the drills Gen. Ibrahim stressed the importance of drills and exercises with friendly Russian forces, according to the ministry.
The ministry also quoted Gen. Kisel as saying that the cooperation and coordination between the friendly Syrian and Russian armies is “important to eliminate terrorism and achieve security and stability in the region and the world”.
This was not the first such joint exercise. In the last two years, Russian and Syrian forces conducted a series of counter-terrorism and sabotage drills at Tartus port.
Russian bases in Syria, including the naval facility in Tartus, came under attack on several occasions in the last few years. The threats of sabotage and terrorist attacks increased dramatically after the start of the Russian special military operation in Ukraine.
