Syrian security forces raided hideouts of ISIS cells in the northern city of Aleppo on May 17, killing two terrorists and arresting several others, the Interior Ministry of the country’s Interim Government announced .

A member of the security forces was also killed during the raids, a spokesman for the ministry said in a statement, adding that security forces seized weapons, bombs and uniforms with the security forces’ insignia from four separate hideouts in Aleppo.

One ISIS terrorist blew himself up after being confronted by security forces, and another was killed in clashes, according to the spokesman.

Syrian activists opposed to the Interim Government casted doubt on the statement released by the Interior Ministry, with some even alleging that the targeted cells were made up from radical personnel belonging to government forces who recently went rogue.

The raids in Aleppo came just a day after ISIS criticized Interim President Ahmad al-Sharaa over his recent meeting with United States President Donlad Trump in the Saudi capital, Riyah. The terrorist group considered, in an editorial in its weekly newspaper, Al-Naba, that the meeting revealed a clearer picture of Sharaa ideological disagreement with the so-called “Islamic State”.

During the meeting, Trump announced that the U.S. will be ending sanctions against Syria and called on Sahraa to make peace with Israel.

Sharaa himself was a lieutenant of ISIS founder Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. When the war first broke out in Syria, al-Baghdadi sent al-Sharaa, also known as Abu Mohamad al-Julani, to Syria to found the Nusra Front.

As the group evolved, it broke ties with ISIS and later al-Qaeda, eventually rebranding as Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham. The group led the final offensive that brought down the Assad regime. It then went on to dissolve itself after installing the Interim Government.
