Syrian War Report – September 20, 2019: Russia Gave Syria 'Green Light' To Use S-300

On September 19, the Syrian Air Defense Forces shot down an unidentified unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) over the town of Aqraba, south of Damascus. Pro-government sources claim that the intercepted UAV was likely operated by Israel.

On August 25, two Hezbollah members were killed by Israeli strikes in the same area. These strikes and the incident with Israeli drones in Beirut led to a local escalation between Hezbollah and the Israeli military at the Lebanese-Israeli contact line on September 1. Since then and until September 19, the situation around Damascus and in southern Lebanon have remained relatively calm.

The al-Qaeda-affiliated militant coalition Wa Harid al-Muminin announced that its forces had shelled positions of the Syrian Army near the area of al-Mashari’a. In a separate development, Idlib militants shelled the Abu al-Duhur humanitarian corridor with mortars in an attempt to prevent civilians from leaving the militant-held area.

On September 18, the joint Russia-Syria Coordination Center on Refugee Repatriation announced that work to resettle refugees from the Rukban camp the US-controlled zone of al-Tanf will begin late on September 27. During the last two years, the camp was in a constant state of humanitarian crisis due to the lack of aid, clean water and food. Nonetheless, the US-led coalition and coalition-backed militants sabotaged previous attempts to evacuate civilians from it.

Russia has given Syria a green light to use the S-300 missile defense system against Israeli targets, according to reports in Russian media citing own sources. Reports claim that the Syrian military received permission to use its air defense systems in response to Israeli actions. However, in this case the Syrian side would bear full responsibility for such a move.

Since the start of the week, positions of Iranian-backed forces near al-Bukamal have come under at least two aerial attacks that are commonly attributed by Israel. Some mainstream media speculated that the September 18 strike may have been delivered by the Saudi Air Force. However, this version was immediately denounced by Saudi Arabia itself.

Confirms that Pootin is under the control of the zio terrorist Satanyahoo….

John

How do you get that?

Dicksonrp

The fact that only now have they given the Syrian forces to use against the terrorist isrealhell AND TOLD THEM THEY HAVE TO STAND THE CONSEQUENCES, rather than tell the jewish terrorist that..

Free man

Putin is acting according to Russia’s interests and fights Russia’s wars. Don’t expect him to fight other countries’ wars and always remember that Syria still exists thanks to Putin.

Dicksonrp

Then the USA is a better ally to their friends than Russia… That’s the essence of what you are saying. The US defends their friend and don’t restrict their defense from selectively acting upon some one who attacks.

Free man

Russia is the only country that has an army in Syria and has been invited by Assad. Obviously the Russians are fighting for Assad. But you want them to fight against a nuclear state and it’s not in Russia’s interest.

Robert Ferrin

No not the U.S. but the U.S. government which is Israels bit*h due to the influence of the Jews money in the the American political system, for as they say we have the best government money can buy.!!!

Peter Jennings

The USMIC is no ally to anyone, but is a dim witted clown ready with a bucket of water for anything the clown is pointed at.

Your last sentence is gobbledygook.

Tudor Miron

:D that was a funny one. “US defends their friends”(c) Lol How old are you? Or you are one of those “smart” guys who think that people around are complete idiots? US have no friends. There are vassals with differing level of control and nothing other than that.

John

okay, thanks.

Peter Jennings

That’s probably the best course of action John as Dicksoups facts are very shaky. They could fall and hurt someone.

Peter Jennings

It’s called, fighting by proxy. The isreali regime and their crooked mates do it all the time.

President Putin has given the Syrian forces full control of their now integrated system, so It’s understandable that the isreali regime and their minions are going to be a little butt hurt over it. Not more little victories for the despots in isreal.

Tudor Miron

He gets it from the script that is passed to him.

You can call me Al

You upvoted yourself, you sad git.

Leon

That connfirms that Syria had a red light to use the S300 provided by the military after the IL20 disaster ( Shoigu ) but the use was bolcked by Putin until now.

You can call me Al

So, more great strategy by Putin ie do not open a new battlefront, when the result will be you are in the middle.

AM Hants

Sounds quite intelligent to me, but, what would I know haha? Meaning President Putin’s response.

Peter Jennings

There is the complicated issue of training and integration. This can take time but it needs to be done to prevent wastage and another IL20 event.

The Russian admin must have contemplated the situation where their S-systems, once in Syrian hands, would be captured by a resurgent wave of terrorists.

Tudor Miron

You want us to believe that Russia is a completely disorganized mess where MOD is doing whatever they want and supreme commander (president of Russia) has no say in what MOD is doing? Try harder.

Leon

No, I think, but I can be wrong, that the Russian military ( Shoigu, Gerasimov ) were very, very upset by the IL 20 disaster. Putin said Israel didn’t do it on purpose, it was an unfortunate even ! But the military said BS, we’ll send S300 to Syria and Israel will understand. After a few week Putin retake control on the military …..and the S300 was on switch OFF position, that means not allowed to be use against Bibi.

Tudor Miron

“After a few week Putin retake control on the military .”(c) Not even funny.

Leon

It was not very good for the russian arm sale to see Israel flying over Syria without any problem. Was the S300 not better than the Patriot ?After what happened with the Houthis, Russians had to do something.

Free man

I will believe it when I see S-300 missiles flying in Syria’s sky.

grumpy_carpenter

S-300 targets aircraft, not drones or missiles. If you see them flying that means Israeli or US aircraft are being targeted, not the weapons they release as is the current situation.

Personally I would prefer that the deterrent effect is enough and the weapon is never used. If Israeli or US manned aircraft start getting shot out of the sky then this war is going to escalate and not just in Syria but across the entire middle east.

It’s one thing to shoot down a countries drones, missiles and glide bombs. That gets reported as a successful strike by the MSM whether they make it to the target or not. But countries and the media notice when manned aircraft fail to return home and when you tell your people their tax dollars bought them the greatest military the world has ever known you have to respond thereby escalating toward WW3 out of pride and hubris.

Real Anti-Racist Action

Actually the S-300 is marketed as designed to also target incoming missiles and cruise missiles. It is also designed to target medium and large drones. That is why the S-300 has a variety of different missiles, different missiles for different targets. Maybe you should actually read the Wikipedia on the S-300 system before committing further on this website.

Tiresia Branding

S-300 is not a stand-alone weapon, but is integrated in a defensive system composed of several layers each designated for a specific purpose. On the same effectiveness, on the same target, the least expensive device will always be used

Peter Jennings

Is that where you get your information? if so, the very best of luck.

AM Hants

Wiki, seriously? Not the best site to reference, owing to the fact it can easily be edited by all and sundry. Plus, who runs Wiki and does a lot of editing on the site?

Real Anti-Racist Action

Russia loves showing off the ability of the S-300 system to shoot imaginary targets in Russian airspace under ideal conditions during advertising stunts for marketing purposes. In real world experience however it is Iran’s Khordad-3 system that is actually able to defend and actually shoot down the US’s most advanced aircraft. If Syria wants results, then Syrian has better acquire Iran’s Bavar-373 that has actually shot down Americans most advanced military aircraft. Russia can only dream of such results, while Iran actually builds and accomplishes such real world results. Russians are sleeping while the rest of the world is actually awake to what is going on. For if Russia were awake, then Serbia would have the S-400 system and so would Lebanon and Iran and Yemen and Syria and North Korea.

Robert Ferrin

And the troll finally exposes himself.

P’;S please don’t feed the troll it only encourages him to post some other misinformation!!

Tudor Miron

He did it (exposed his troll nature) long before.

John

I have been reading about red and green lights on things like the S-330 for a while. I think they exist but, I am not agreeing with what has been publically discussed about what they actually relate to in these circumstances.

To me, the political decision about the S-300 was made the moment Russia decided to send them to Syria. Russia doesn’t do the dance in the middle of the street with their pants pulled down and blindfolded. They know what giving them to the Syrian government signified. it was a very serious move.

I am seeing the ‘green light’ on this as a certification that the SAAF actually has gained sufficient capability, proficiency with this weapon system, to let them work on their own. This should be absolutely frightening to a whole host of folks, especially the Israelis. My take on this, I wish well to all.

Real Anti-Racist Action

Israel has no fear of an anti-air system that is two previous generations ago in tech. Israel has the worlds most advanced stealth fighter currently in production on the planed. Israel may fear Russia’s S-500, maybe worries about the S-400, but Israelis sleep just fine knowing the best thing Syria has in their inventory is a system with ‘Friend or Foe’ software that Israel already purchased the codes from their spies in the Russian military. Syria badly needs Iran’s Bavar-373 or Khordad-15 system. They have no faulty friend or foe software.

John

Hey Real. If the S-300s from Russia, consisting of units that were replaced by the S-400 in defense of Russia proper, then I don’t think Israel would have broken a sweat over them in the first place. I think those units sent to Syria area very big problem for Israel. Look at what Iran did with an American RIM-66 missile from the 1960s. They blew away one of the most advance aircraft ever produced with ease, even in stealth mode and closely shadowing a P-8 to further hide it’s presence. It had a ton of state of the art ECM gear on it. It’s not the age of the gear, it is how it i applied.

As far as their ‘ stealth ‘ planes, Russia already told everybody around Syria a while ago, that anybody who believed in ‘invisible’ jets would run into hard reality. Besides, I haven’t see a single piece of information about Israeli stealth planes either. If they really existed or were know to be as good as you were saying, they would be the talk of the town. They are not. Further, why would they buy dogs like the F-35 if they had those or even better, sell them to the US. I am not buying it, about the super invisible stuff from Israel. My take. I wish you well Real.

Real Anti-Racist Action

Iran has morphed and highly updated and altered their equipment. Syria has not. The S-300 that Syria got could become deadly effective. But for that to happen they must be shipped to Iran for about a year to be completely overhauled and altered into a brand new system that would include a new designation. Nothing Iran has from the US has remain as it was. Even the radars in the old American plains are completely new of indigenous design. The S-300 has possibilities, provided that the right competent people redesign it from the ground up. Change out all of its faulty software. Update the radars. And upgrade it’s counter measures against electronic warfare. Without these measures taken, the F35 beats the factory-S-300 every time. In fact with the drone that Syrian shot down last night over Damascus, the Russian news even said that the Russian’s has to giver the information to Syria to deal with it. The S-400 was able to detect it on it’s own, but the Syrian S-300 was blind to the drone and had to be informed by Russians.

I agree with you that Israels stuff is not super invisible. In fact it is not the plane that is invisible, it is the S-300 that is naively blind. Your statement just goes to show how blind the S-300 is. The plane itself does not even have to have invisibility to defeat the S-300 at all.

John

If Syria was able to almost clip an F-35 with an S-200 system, they will do fine with the S-300s they have recieved.

Hisham Saber

And what are u ?Aerial defense system engineer ? Stop throwing assumptions around/. Really, /one year? come on, I Iran phas updated both the hardware and software of Syria’s S-300,S. And that falls into Irans , Syria’s, Lebanons, Iraq,s preparations for full spectrum warfare once it breaks out. The Axis of Resistance have been fully preparing. Lots of sophisticated Chinese warfare gadgetry in play too. Cheap, and very lethal.

The coming battle will prove who wins the MENA region, the old timers the U.S, Britain and France or to THE NEW DEAL, China and Russia in the OBR.

cdvision

RARA The S300 is linked into sensor feeds from the S400 and likely also Russian satellite and airborne feeds. And who knows what the Iranians have given Syria?

AM Hants

Interesting what you have to say, however, not buying it.

Iran, as proven, whilst thinking of magrav technology and who was behind it’s development, has some wonderful defence creativity and must admit, I am seriously interested in what they will bring out of their toybox, when needed.

However, why do you have to put Russian defence systems down? They work quite well.

Yesterday, I was reading an interesting article, and it was based on the success of the US missile defence systems. Owing to their lack of success, over in Saudi. Explaining, how little success they have had, hitting any target, apart taking out their own planes or those of friends, and that is going back to the 90s to present day. Then there was an explanation, with Syria for example and just how many drones and missiles they have managed to take out. It was a fascinating read. Especially when you think how much the Patriot System is costing the tax payer of the US.

……………………..

U.S. Ships More Air Defense Systems That Do Not Work To Saudi Arabia

‘…After the first Gulf war Congress investigated the issue and concluded:

The Patriot missile system was not the spectacular success in the Persian Gulf War that the American public was led to believe. There is little evidence to prove that the Patriot hit more than a few Scud missiles launched by Iraq during the Gulf War, and there are some doubts about even these engagements…

During the first Gulf war the Patriot system had a systemic software problem that made them incapable of hitting the targets:

On February 25, 1991, during the Gulf War, an American Patriot Missile battery in Dharan, Saudi Arabia, failed to track and intercept an incoming Iraqi Scud missile. The Scud struck an American Army barracks, killing 28 soldiers and injuring around 100 other people. A report of the General Accounting office, GAO/IMTEC-92-26, entitled Patriot Missile Defense: Software Problem Led to System Failure at Dhahran, Saudi Arabia reported on the cause of the failure. It turns out that the cause was an inaccurate calculation of the time since boot due to computer arithmetic errors. Specifically, the time in tenths of second as measured by the system’s internal clock was multiplied by 1/10 to produce the time in seconds. This calculation was performed using a 24 bit fixed point register. In particular, the value 1/10, which has a non-terminating binary expansion, was chopped at 24 bits after the radix point. The small chopping error, when multiplied by the large number giving the time in tenths of a second, led to a significant error. Twelve years later, during the war on Iraq, the Patriots also failed:

The 32nd Army Air and Missile Defense Command, which is charged with protecting U.S. ground forces from air and missile attacks, recently released its account of “Operation Iraqi Freedom.” As part of that history, the command reports that the Patriot missile defense system, which is designed to destroy short- and medium-range ballistic missiles, scored a perfect nine for nine in intercepting Iraqi missiles. Colonel Charles Anderson, chief of staff of the command, wrote, “The critics concerns over Patriot lethality should be forever silenced.” Yet Iraq fired at least 23 ballistic and cruise missiles, according to the report, during the three-week span it took U.S. forces to fight their way to Baghdad and topple Saddam Hussein’s regime.

Nine out of more than twenty three is better than zero but not a great record. But the Patriots also achieved two hits on fighter planes. Unfortunately those were the wrong ones:

A US Navy fighter has been shot down over Iraq by a Patriot missile in the second friendly-fire incident involving the weapon.

The F-18 Hornet from the carrier Kitty Hawk went missing on Wednesday night during a bombing mission. The incident follows the shooting down of an RAF Tornado GR4 by a Patriot as it returned to base in Kuwait, with the loss of its two-man crew.

In 2017 the Saudis fired Patriot missiles against Yemeni ballistic missiles that were launched at Riyadh. All of them failed to hit their targets:

[M]y colleagues at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies and I closely examined two different missile attacks on Saudi Arabia from November and December 2017. In both cases, we found that it is very unlikely the missiles were shot down, despite officials’ statements to the contrary.

The Patriot system does not work. It is one of those typical U.S. big ticket items that enrich the owners of the defense industry but are of little combat value.

https://www.moonofalabama.org/2019/09/us-ships-more-air-defense-systems-that-do-not-work-to-saudi-arabia.html

……………………..

Taken from the article:

‘…While Russia’s S-400 system may have impressive specifications on paper, many analysts are cautious in their assessment of it. It has not been fully tested in real life, whereas the Patriot system successfully intercepted missiles during both the Gulf War and the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq…’ – The reason it has not been tested, is owing to the fact nobody will go near it, owing to fear. Which seems quite a worthy reference.

AM Hants

Think the birds managed to find those Israel stealth planes. Do believe, those pesky birds took one out, and not long after it came out of the factory and was delivered to Israel. Or were those pesky little birds, finding those troublesome stealth jets, being helped by the old Syrian S-200?

John

Hi AM. oh yeah, that one was hilarious. :)

AM Hants

Hi, there has been a lot of bery black comedy, over the past few years. Providing pure laughter.

StopIsraeliGenocideInPalestine

Not bad – rockets disguised as birds.

StopIsraeliGenocideInPalestine

US and Jewish weapons work only against toddlers or unarmed people. We see it every day – what you Nazi SS swines do to people.

John

I have no idea what you are talking about, run it by me again please?

Hisham Saber

Then how come the IAF launch attacks on Syria from so far away, usually behind Lebanese mountain ranges and civilian air traffic?

Last time your brave fearless IAF F-16’s ventured into Syrian airspace one got shot down by a rudimentary S-200 And another one sustained major damage requiring emergency landing at the closest base.

You are either misled, naïve or simply an agitator with Zionist leanings.,

Robert Ferrin

Lol bulls*it there is no such thing as a stealth airplane that was de-bunk long ago,Russia’s radar can pick up Israels famed stealth plane and blow it out of the sky as well as any other plane, and I do trust that you have noted that Israel is very careful to keep those so called stealth plane as far away from Syria as they can.!!!

Peter Jennings

There is really only one way to find out Mr rascist. Have your mates do another bombing run in their ‘invisable’ planes. So far, they have had it easy.

AM Hants

Then if that is the case, as memories of a new F35, that took a hit, either from an old S-200 or a bird strike, so comes to mind, then why is Israel freaking out that Syria has the S-300?

StopIsraeliGenocideInPalestine

The Zio-Nazis have lost it! Face it Israel is finished. In fact Israel looks like a copy of Nazi Germany.

Ewan

Yeah Thumbs up to you Living Room Hasbara Military analyst. Israel has EVERYTHING to fear. An F35 received a hit from a Syria S200 two years ago, The Serbs shot down a older gen US stealth bomber using a modified s200 in the NATO campaign against that country decades ago. Israel went bananas when Putin wanted to sell the S300 to Syria recently – The Chinese have demonstrated the ability of their RADAR systems to detect stealth aircraft. Why bother if it means nothing? Israel is sh!tting bricks because it is running out of options to Bully, attack and massacre at will. Its terrorist activities have been severly curtailed by Hezbollah and Iran. As we have seen, the inter-IDF finger pointing after Israel’s 2006 defeat by Hezbollah as to who was responsible for the defeat proves one thing – That the IDF is an incompetent, unmotivated, unprofessional terror outfit that would lose a one-on one with Hezbollah, never mind Iran. Its ONLY hope is superior Aircraft technology and even that it doesnt have. Don’t put all your eggs in the F35 basket. Best buy a one way ticket back to your Polish Ghetto or better still, Khazaria

frankly

I can imagine what it must be like to be up there with all the bells and whistles going off after your leader telling you, stay cool, they won’t shoot! Yeah easy for them to say, back at the hanger smokin’ and jokin’

Seems to me keeping those missiles in the can prolongs the empire agony, fraying the nerves of any potential victims or perhaps dangerously increasing their comfort zone.

A lot of us root for a Hollywood style ending with the aggressors meeting their match. However the Russians know war all to well and have shown a restraint that completely reveals who is actually committing the war crimes. Sorry quit believing the MSM in the sixties.

To me it is not a sign of military might when your veterans and active duty troops kill themselves at around 21 per day. Oh I suppose they are just sad because they had to leave their buddie’s behind. The apostrophe gives it away, chuckle!

AM Hants

Over on Mint Press, is an article, with regards 3 US journalists, who took up the invite to go to Syria and see for themselves. It is an interesting article, together with how the journalistic clusters, of those supporting the White Helmets, have rubbished their efforts.

Using Forged Emails, “Progressive” Journalists Smear Their Own for Challenging Syria Groupthink Behind the campaign to silence these three critical, anti-war journalists was the same cast of characters that have become notorious in progressive circles for the viciousness of their attacks against anyone willing to come out against regime change in Syria.

‘… was most shocked to see how close foreign-backed extremist militants came to taking control of the Syrian capital. They were meters away from capturing the old city, the ancient heart of Damascus. When I rode into Damascus for the first time and saw the large Syrian flag still waving above the city, I was reminded that many of my colleagues in U.S. media were supporting a war that would have seen that banner replaced with one belonging to ISIS or Al-Qaeda…’

https://www.mintpressnews.com/using-forged-emails-progressive-journalists-smear-challenging-syria-groupthink/261972/ ……………….

What I found interesting and it does tie into Russia.

When you look at 9/11 and the horror, including the reaction from Saudi, who were alleged to be rejoicing and the reaction from Russia, who sent the people of America a $12 million monument, as a form of friendship, appreciationship, shared grief, support, compassion. Well, how does the US, well Washington DC, treat those who mocked her, following events of 9/11 and those who did no more than show her love and compassion.

Guees, the section of the article, I have copied, allows one to think to themselves, with regards the gratitude of Washington DC.

Rodney Loder

That’s a new one, Saudi and israeli operations indistinguishable.
