On March 19, Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) security forces, known as the General Security Agency, announced that their units had neutralized a cell of ISIS in the northwestern Syrian region of Greater Idlib.
In a statement, Diya al-Omar, a spokesman for the General Security Agency, revealed that the cell, which was made up of five members, carried out assassinations and planted explosive devices in Greater Idlib.
HTS militants raided three hideouts of the cell, two located in Idlib city and one in the town of Harim on the border with Turkey, late on March 18.
In Harim, a member of the cell was captured by HTS militants without a fight. However, the cells’ members in Idlib city showed fierce resistance. As a result, heavy clashes broke out. In the end two members of the cell were killed and two others were captured. A militant of HTS and a civilian were also killed.
“In the cell’s three hideouts various weapons, shells and explosive belts were seized,” al-Omar said in the statement.
HTS has been cracking down on ISIS cells in Greater Idlib for more than two years. While HTS promotes its actions as some sort of a “war on terrorism,” the truth is that HTS is working to eliminate any competition in Greater Idlib.
