Three Lebanese fighters of Hezbollah and an affiliated Syrian man were reported killed in an alleged Israeli drone strike that hit a vehicle in the southern Syrian governorate of al-Qunitra on December 8.

Syria’s Sham FM said that the strike took place in Madinat al-Baath, a city located right on the separation line with the Israeli-occupied part of the Golan Heights. The pro-government radio station published a picture purportedly showing the car that was hit, which appeared to be a cab.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported that four people, including three fighters from Hezbollah, were killed in the strike.

“A Syrian and three Lebanese Hezbollah fighters from the surveillance and missile-launching unit were killed in the Israeli drone strike on their rented car” in Madinat al-Baath, SOHR head Rami Abdel Rahman told AFP.

The organization, which is based in the United Kingdom run by a single person, has regularly been accused by Syrian war analysts of false reporting. However, Lebanese activists affiliated with Hezbollah backed the report.

Later, Hezbollah said that three of its fighters were killed “on the road to Jerusalem,” without specifying where or when they lost their lives.

The strikes came just hours after the Israeli Defense Forces said it struck targets in Syria, in response to rocket fire on the Golan. Two projectiles reportedly landed in open areas near Buq’ata, causing no damage.

Israel escalated its attacks on Syria significantly since the outbreak of the war with the Hamas Movement and other Palestinian armed factions in the Gaza Strip.

The alleged Israeli strike on al-Qunitra was not the first to reportedly kill fighters from Hezbollah. On November 10, seven fighters of Hezbollah were killed when an Israeli strike hit the outskirts of the city of Homs. At the time, Israel said that the strike was carried out in response to a drone attack that targeted its southernmost city of Eilat a day earlier, but it didn’t confirm that the drone was launched from Syria. Hassan Nasrallah, Secretary General of Hezbollah, praised the attack without claiming responsibility.

Additionally, two officers of the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps were killed on December 2 when a series of Israeli strikes hit the outskirts of the Syrian capital, Damascus.
