Tor-M2 air defense systems of the Vostok Group of Forces had successfully destroyed Storm Shadow cruise missiles, the Defense Ministry of Russia reported on May 16.
“Storm Shadow is quite a complex target launched from enemy aircraft. We are warned about that and then we look in that sector, detect and destroy it. The complexity of this target is that it flies at a low altitude. But this [Tor-M2] system excellently copes with low-flying targets,” the ministry quoted an air defense commander with the call sign Balova as saying.
Tor-M2 systems shielded first-echelon troops and civilian facilities in the south Donetsk direction, according to the commander, who noted that every system in service with the Vostok Group of Forces now has a record of dozens of destroyed targets including drones, glide aerial bombs, aircraft and helicopters.
The Tor-M2 is a deeply upgraded version of the Soviet-era Tor medium-altitude, short-range air defense system. This version has an improved fire control radar coverage and protection against spoofing. It can also engage up to four targets simultaneously.
The main armament of the Tor-M2 is the 9M338 missile, which has a range of 16 kilometers and a flight ceiling of ten kilometers. A single system can be armed with up to 16 of the advanced compact missile.
The Storm Shadow is a low-observable, long-range, air-launched cruise missile developed in the 1990s by Matra and British Aerospace, and now manufactured by MBDA. It features a GPS-aided inertial navigation system with a terrain profile matching system. For terminal guidance, the missile is equipped with an imaging infrared scene-mapping area correlator system.
The maximum range of the Storm Shadow is 560 kilometers. However, it is thought that Ukraine received the downgraded export version with a range of 250 kilometers. The Ukrainian Air Force has reportedly integrated the 1,300 kg cruise missile on its Soviet-era Su-24 fighter bombers.
Kiev forces have launched dozens of Storm Shadow missiles at targets in the Donbass region and the Crimean Peninsula since last year. Most of the attacks were however foiled by Russian air defenses thanks to systems like the Tor-M2.
