United States President Donald Trump on July 2 said that the American forces carried out strikes on Iran across three consecutive nights in response to attacks on commercial shipping, destroying new radar systems.
Speaking in an interview with CNBC, Trump said, “We blew up Iran’s radar; they had no radar, they still don’t. We blew it up again the other night. They had a nice new radar; they were all set to go, and we blew it up last week. They have to start all over again for a third time.”
Asked whether the US was prepared for further action against the Islamic Republic, the U.S. president replied, “We have all the assets.”
The U.S. launched strikes against targets in southern Iran, specifically in Sirik County and Qeshm Island, on June 26, 27 and 28 after accusing the Islamic Republic of targeting two vessels close to the Strait of Hormuz.
In two separate statements on the strikes, the Central Command said that surveillance infrastructure, air defense sites and radar systems were hit.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps responded to the U.S. strikes, targeting American bases in both Kuwait and Bahrain with missiles and drones.
Trump’s latest remarks indicate that at least one of the radars targeted during the latest strikes was delivered to the Islamic Republic after the start of the American-Israeli war.
In April, a report by CBS News citing an assessment by the Pentagon’s Defense Intelligence Agency revealed that China was considering supplying Iran with advanced radar systems.
U.S. officials told the news channel at the time that the systems under consideration included X-band radar technology that could improve the Islamic Republic’s ability to detect low-flying drones and cruise missiles and strengthen its air defenses against advanced strikes.
Other reports that emerged in American media around the same time also alleged that China was planning to supply Iran with man-portable air defense systems, more known as MANPADS.
In any case, it is clear that Iran is successfully rebuilding its air defense network. In fact, since the start of the ceasefire last April, the Islamic Republic has shot down three American MQ-9 Reaper combat drones, an MQ-1 Predator combat drone, and an AH-64 Apache attack helicopter. The U.S. suffered other aerial losses, which the Islamic Republic is also suspected of being responsible for, including two MQ-4C Triton surveillance drones which got hit over the Persian Gulf, and an SH-60 Seahawk that recently crashed in the Arabian Sea.
