United States President Donald Trump said on December 29 that he would back a new Israeli attack on Iran if the latter “will continue with missiles”.
Standing next to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the Mar-a-Lago Club in Florida, Trump answered “yes” when asked about the matter.
If Iran continued its nuclear program, he said he would back an attack “fast,” adding “One would be yes, absolutely, the other was, we’ll do it immediately.”
However, Trump said that he won’t “talk about the overthrow of a regime” after being asked if he would back toppling the Islamic Republic in Iran.
“They’ve got a lot of problems in Iran, they have tremendous inflation. Their economy is bust, their economy is no good, and their people aren’t happy,” he says. “But don’t forget, every time they have a rioter or someone forms a group, little or big, they start shooting people. You know, they kill people.”
“They’re vicious, vicious people.”
Trump’s remarks were expected. The last few weeks saw the release of several reports by Hebrew, Western and even Persian pro-opposition media focused on Iran’s attempt to rebuild and expand its missile program. This campaign was clearly launched to justify an escalation by Israel.
A recent report by NBC News even revealed Netanyahu plans to present options for a possible fresh attack on Iran to Trump during the meeting in Mar-a-Lago.
The report said that Israel is growing increasingly concerned that the Islamic Republic is rebuilding and even expanding its ballistic missile production in the wake of the nations’ 12-day war in June.
Ali Shamkhani, a prominent advisor to the Iranian supreme leader who survived an assassination attempt during the last war with severe wounds, responded to Trump’s remarks with a serious warning.
“Under Iran’s defense doctrine, responses are set before threats materialize. Iran’s #Missile_Capability and defense are not containable or permission-based,” Shamkhani wrote on X.
“Any aggression will face an immediate #Harsh_Response beyond its planners’ imagination.”
It’s clear now that Netanyahu got what he wanted from the meeting with Trump, which is a U.S. green light to attack Iran again.
The pretext for the war is also clear and that it is Iran’s work to rebuild and expand its missile program, its main means of deterrence.
That’s being said, it is impossible to guess when Israel would attack. The new war could start within a few days, or after a few years. The last attack on the Islamic Republic’s nuclear program required extensive planning by both Israel and the U.S. Trump himself said that the U.S. The Air Force trained for the bomber raid on the underground facilities in Isfahan, Natanz and Fordow for over a decade.
