President Donald Trump said on December 18 that he is leaving the possibility of a war with Venezuela on the table, amid a notable increase in U.S. military activities in both the Caribbean Sea and the Eastern Pacific Ocean.
Earlier in the week, Trump ordered a naval blockade of all oil tankers, which are under U.S. sanctions, entering and leaving Venezuelan ports. A few days before announcing the blockade, the U.S. seized the Skipper oil tanker off the coast of Venezuela.
These developments represented a major escalation in the U.S. pressure campaign against Venezuela, which began in October and spun a military operation against drug traffickers later in September.
“I don’t rule it out, no,” Trump told NBC News in a phone interview.
When first asked about the possibility of war during the interview, Trump said “I don’t discuss it.” However, he confirmed it was a possibility after being pressed by NBC.
Trump also vowed that there will be additional seizures of oil tankers, saying that “if they’re foolish enough to be sailing along, they’ll be sailing along back into one of our harbors.”
Despite the shape tune, he declined to say whether ousting Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro was the ultimate goal of the ongoing U.S. campaign.
“He knows exactly what I want,” Trump replied. “He knows better than anybody.”
On the same day as the interview, the U.S. Southern Command struck two more alleged drug trafficking boats in the Eastern Pacific.
“Intelligence confirmed that the vessels were transiting along known narco-trafficking routes in the Eastern Pacific and were engaged in narco-trafficking operations. A total of five male narco-terrorists were killed during these actions – three in the first vessel and two in the second vessel. No U.S. military forces were harmed,” the command said in a post to X.
The latest strikes brought the number of alleged drug boats hit by SOUTHCOM since the U.S. military began its campaign against drug cartels in the Eastern Pacific and the Caribbean Sea to 28. Including the last casualties, the campaign has so far claimed the lives of at least 104 people, all claimed to be drug traffickers.
In addition to the strikes in the Eastern Pacific, an uptake in U.S. military activists over the Caribbean was reported on the same day.
F/A-18E/F Super Hornet fighter jets, and EA-18G Growler electronic attack jets, as well as E-3 Sentry and E-2 Hawkeye airborne early warning and control aircraft were spotted flying over international waters off the shores of Venezuela, according to flight tracking data.

The last few days saw a notable shift in the narrative adopted by the U.S., with Trump even accusing Caracas of illegally taking away “energy rights” from American companies. Washington is making its goals more clear, and possibly preparing the public for war.
Venezuela has been preparing for a U.S. invasion since October. Caracas protested the recent escalation by the U.S., and even complained to the United Nations. Other than that, the country could do very little to avoid the war, which will likely have far-reaching catastrophic consequences.
