On May 6, a senior commander of the Turkish-backed Sultan Murad Division survived an assassination attempt in the occupied area of Afrin.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), an improvised explosive device (IED) ripped through the commander’s pick-up truck in the district of Sharran in southern Afrin. The commander, known as “Abu Yazan,” survived the explosion.

Abu Yazan is reportedly a senior security commander of the Sultan Murad Division. According to Kurdish sources, he is responsible for several crimes against locals in Afrin.

A day earlier, a similar IED attack took place in the Turkish-occupied city of al-Bab, also in the northern countryside of Aleppo.

The attack claimed the life of Muhammad Zain al-Shihabi, a civilian who works in money transfer in the city. Personal disagreements were apparently behind the assassination.

The Turkish military and its proxies are yet to take any serious measures to improve security in their areas in northern Aleppo. This is leading to a state of lawlessness there.
