U.S. And Japan Set To Overtake Taiwan In Semiconductor Technology Development

The Japanese and U.S. governments are close to agreeing to cooperate in the production of chips using 2-nm (nanometer) technology and even more advanced solutions. Both countries are concerned about their dependence on Taiwanese and other suppliers and are seeking to diversify their sources. They are also working on a mechanism to prevent technology leakage, especially in China.

The current management of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) has been favorable to the idea of localizing contract production of semiconductor components in the United States and Japan.

TSMC is currently the leading developer of 2-nanometer technology, while IBM completed a prototype in 2021. The Japanese government has proposed that TSMC builds a plant on the southwestern island of Kyushu, to increase domestic chip production, but the plant would only produce less advanced chips on 10 to 20 nm technology.

In the first case, a TSMC facility capable of producing 5nm products should be built in Arizona by 2024.

In the second case, a joint venture with Sony and Denso will be set up in Japan within a comparable time frame, which will produce a range of specific products that require lithographic technology from 28 to 12 nm inclusive.

It turns out that by the time they launch, TSMC’s new facilities outside of Taiwan will not be using the most advanced lithography. That said, U.S. and Japanese authorities are interested in narrowing or even closing the technological gap with Taiwan in lithography.

The two countries will join their efforts in this area to jointly master 2nm and more advanced technological processes. At least, the heads of the U.S. and Japanese ministries will negotiate on this issue.

That said, the new Japan-U.S. collaboration focused on advanced development can be seen as the next step after the invitation to TSMC. The U.S. and Japan are also working on a mechanism to prevent technology leakage to China and other countries. Japanese Minister of Economy, Trade, and Industry Koichi Hagiuda is visiting the U.S. to meet with U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo.

Interesting is the fact that in 1990 Japan controlled nearly half of the semiconductor market and its turnover at that time did not exceed $38 billion at today’s prices. Now the share of this country has decreased to 10%, but the market turnover has grown at least tenfold.

The Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry attribute Japan’s weakening dominance to several factors, including the U.S.-Japan trade war on memory chips, its inability to implement a horizontally integrated manufacturing model, a delay in digitalization, and other factors.

At this point, it can put forward the theory that the U.S. is trying to secure itself in the field of semiconductors. The reason for this cooperation was the constant monitoring of Taiwan by China and the threat of reunification with the mainland. Taiwanese authorities did not comment on the U.S.-Japan semiconductor cooperation.

So Taiwan is developing 0.2nm semiconductor technology. What a miracle!!!!! Yup, Chinese always have the best and the fastest. Fastest clock in the World, the biggest toilet bowl in the World, etc. etc.

It was funny how Intel was confused in 2020 that TSMC, who does not do any research, have 7nm technology while Intel having problems getting it to work. Well well well, TSMC were using 14nm technology, renamed it to 7nm and called it a day :D

Technology leakage They’re perfectly happy to, as far as I understand it, STEAL 5g though. And now China’s already going 6g but the useless west’s hardly even got their consumers off 4g still. Still acting as if 5g s something new Chinese friends of mine couldn’t stand living in this hillbilly society of backward underdeveloped retarded primitives and had to go home to be with actually real people living in the real world.

China is developing a complete new approach on semi conductors though. They don’t have access to finest litography machines but they seem to be quite successful finding the way around. Once when they are there i would not be surprised if they overtake all the competition, like with 5g and with AI tools.

Off course you have to develop new approaches so then breakthrougs could happen. Look, Intel, AMD and semiconductor industry only sells smalls advanced every year. The industry already have 50x CPU proc technologies but instead they sell the latest they proffit 50x giving small advances while they get the Technology Edge Advantages over all of us ‘the consumers’.

The moment the us and japan can replace the tsmc stuff, that moment the life insurance of taiwan runs out cause destroying the factorys there so china will not get them becomes viable for the us.

And that moment taiwan may be much more usefull as place to bleed china like russia in ukraine then a business asset.

Taiwan has been concentrating on its semiconductor industry for the past 40 years, largely ignored by US. Japan’s memory chip industry was deliberately whacked by US to foster SKorea. While US Intel Corp killed off its own engineering capability and R&D for stock prices. Good luck partnering with US, they will steal your tech, stab you in the back, and make you the slave.

Meanwhile, in Russia… the most advanced homegrown CPU is an Elbrus. Made on 28 nm lithography which has been around for about 20 years in the west. Can’t even run Java apps. Full sized servers with mains power is about as powerful as a first gen iPhone from 2008.

These jokers don’t understand the chip business. It’s about the entire ecosystem and supply and demand. Just because you subsidize to get the highest resolution doesn’t mean that it is going to be cost effective and market viable. If it was as easy as throwing money at it, governments everywhere would already have tried doing so.

Good luck with that. You don’t have the slightest idea of how many technologies and complexity there is behind the semiconductor industry. And the costs are cosmic, this is why they focus on economies of scale and concentrate all of the production in few areas.

It would require at least 30 years for Japan and or US to get to the point where Taiwan is today. Even China hasn’t been able to build it from scratch and they have just been focusing ( by spending hundreds of billions ) on the infrastructure, while stealing thousands of engineers from Taiwan.

I would like to be able to buy everyday items such as a basic car, fridge etc etc WITHOUT any chips. Chips are fine for advanced applications BUT they are not needed for people who are able to switch on an appliance or wind up a car window etc. :)

Having the ability, at great cost, for chips that control things I never want to use are a waste of resources.
