The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) announced May 1 that its forces engaged and destroyed an uncrewed surface vessel (USV) in areas controlled by the Houthis (Ansar Allah) in Yemen a day earlier.
“It was determined the USV presented an imminent threat to U.S., coalition forces, and merchant vessels in the region,” the command said in a statement. “These actions are taken to protect freedom of navigation and make international waters safer and more secure for U.S., coalition, and merchant vessels.”
CENTCOM didn’t specify where exactly the USV was destroyed. However, Yemen’s Al-Masirah TV, which is run by the Houthis, reported “American-British” strikes on the western province of al-Hodeidah on April 30.
The strikes targeted the port of Ras Issa in the northwestern district of al-Salif, the news channel said without providing additional details.
Since last November, the Houthis, who are backed by Iran, have attacked dozens of vessels affiliated with Israel or owned by the U.S. and the United Kingdom in the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden, the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean in response to the Israeli war and siege on the Palestinian Gaza Strip.
In addition, the group carried out a number of drone and missile attacks against Eilat and shot down three U.S. combat drones.
The U.S. and the UK have carried out hundreds of strikes against Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen since January in an attempt to deter the Houthis, but to no avail.
