The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) said on October 24 that its forces shot down 20 suicide drones and cruise missiles over its area of responsibility over the past week.
The command’s area of responsibility covers 21 countries stretching from Northeast Africa across the Middle East to Central and South Asia.
In a statement, CENTCOM described the downed drones and missiles as “Iranian-supplied weapons” and said that they were launched by the Houthis (Ansar Allah) in Yemen and other Iran-aligned armed factions over several days.
“These Iranian-supplied weapons, launched episodically by the Houthis and Iranian-Aligned Militia Groups (IAMGs) over several days during the week, posed a significant risk to United States, allies, and partner forces, as well as civilians in the region,” the command said, using the acronym IMAGs to apparently refer to the Islamic Resistance in Iraq who, like the Houthis, have been launching attacks against Israel and U.S. forces in the Middle East since the outbreak of the war in the Gaza Strip last year.
The command noted that the weapons were downed by a combination of U.S. Air Force and U.S. Navy assets deployed to the region.
“U.S. and coalition forces remain at a high level of readiness, postured to defend U.S. interests and those of our allies and partners in the region,” it added.
The U.S. continues to show unwavering support for Israel’s war on Gaza and operations against Hezbollah, even after the death of more than 42,000 Palestinians and over 2,500 Lebanese.
These conflicts led to a larger U.S. military presence in the Middle East, with American air defenses and troops deployed in Israel itself. Now, the risks of an all-out war in the region with the Iran-led Axis of Resistance have never been higher.
